Naomi Novik, author of the bestselling Temeraire series, flew into Seattle WA yesterday on tour for the release of her newest novel, Victory of Eagles. And she was caught on camera!
I am so lucky to live in such a bookie city as Seattle!
After visiting many of the local bookstores and The Signed Page for drop-by signings, Naomi ended her day at the University Bookstore, one of the larger independent booksellers in the United States. Duane Wilkins, long-time sci-fi/fantasy guru for the bookstore, holds great events and I arrived early, worried if I came late I might not have a seat for the event.
By the time Naomi took the microphone, all but a few lone seats were filled and several fans stood at the back of the room.
Naomi is a smallish woman with flaming red hair and endless enthusiasm for her craft. When she smiles, you immediately notice how happy she is to be doing what she is doing and the quick intelligence behind her eyes. She stepped to the microphone, uncapped her water bottle, and began reading a short story that will be featured in Dragons!, a forthcoming anthology edited by Gardner Dozois.
The short story, which I hope to post an excerpt from soon, centered around an Italian man named Antoni who tames the first dragon of the West!
As is customary after most event readings, Naomi held a Q&A where the dozens of fans in the audience could ask their whim. This is the first part of that Q&A.
The second part of the Q&A will be posted tomorrow. And the third the next day!
And if we are lucky, a video excerpt of the short story Naomi read will be available soon!

I got the book the other day from the library! I have to try and remember all that happened in the previous installment. They were all mixed up in that Africa business right? Best book in the series, in my opinion, but we'll see. We'll see. [opens new book]
Yeah, Africa business! In today's Q&A (Part 2), Naomi talks about what it is like trying to build Africa and China from scratch in her books and the lengths she had to go through to make it work (Note: the Elephant story). haha
Happy Reading, Tillie!
Thanks for posting this ! I got to go to a signing with her at comic-con but I missed all the panels she was on. She is very nice, and she drew the sweetest little dragon and rider in my book.
I missed all the panels she was on too! That's why I made sure to capture her here in Seattle. :) Hopefully someone will post video from her San Diego Comic-Con panels... *ahem, ahem*
