After the doors to the convention center close, the parties begin! San Diego is very nearly a 24-7 sort of affair; the hours spent on the convention floor sometimes only form a sort of prequel. Last night I was at the Random House party, at which science fiction luminaries such as Alan Dean Foster and Naomi Novik mingled with comics stars such as Queenie Chan and Hiro Mashima. I was especially happy to spend some time with one of my authors, David Petersen, and his charming wife Julia; we had the honor of publishing his Mouse Guard in paperback this year.
If you haven’t yet read Mouse Guard, I give you permission to step away from Suvudu for a moment and read it now. It’s been compared variously to The Secret of Nimh, The Lord of the Rings, Watership Down, and Brian Jacques’ Redwall series, but David’s vision is singular, and his creation of his own world total and wholly persuasive.
David’s up for two Eisner Awards this year: Best Children’s Publication and Best Reprint Album. We wish him the best of luck tonight!
