Terry Brooks & The Soldier

Bringing you a feel good moment. And the reason why authors make a difference!
Terry Brooks held his first event for the release of The Gypsy Morph last night. It was a great event where he read an excerpt from the Landover novel to be released in 2009, answered several questions (I’ll post video of that Q&A soon), and he signed hundreds and hundreds of books for his fans.
Halfway through the signing event, a mother with three young children brought her copy of The Gypsy Morph to Terry to be signed. At that exact moment, her cell phone rang; it was her husband calling, a soldier stationed in the Middle East and a huge Terry Brooks fan. The book to be signed was for him and would soon be mailed to the Middle East.
Terry stood up from his chair and asked for the phone.
Over the next two minutes, Terry talked to the soldier as if he was at the signing event. It was one of those moments that made me proud to know Terry and call him friend, because it illustrates what it should mean to be an author and more than that a good person. Terry took a few minutes out of his night to share some semblance of home with a man who is thousands and thousands of miles away in a life-threatening part of the world.

After speaking with the soldier, Terry signed the book and handed it over to the family. He then took a picture with that family to be posted under the Pictures gallery on his official website in hopes of the soldier logging in and enjoying a photo from home—the event where he got to speak with Terry Brooks, one of his idols.
The little things matter in this life. I’m happy I got to witness one of them and share it with you!

Wow - really awesome stuff!
And this is why Terry is such a class act. Seriously, I respect Terry enormously. He's truly a good egg.
Thank you for letting us know that Shawn, I'm hoping to see Terry next Friday in Raleigh, NC.
It helps remind us all that everyone has that something special, the author, the soldier. Though worlds apart, share that one moment in time that will stay with us always.
Thank you again,
GOD BLESS THE USA, and OUR SOLDIERS.

Chris, I am also in Holly Springs and looking forward to Terry's appearance on Friday -- if he isn't forced to cancel by Hurricane Hanna. I wouldn't blame him if he decided that North Carolina is not a good place to be this weekend.
I'm so excited that he did that, what a great thing. He replied to a letter I once wrote and it's a prized possession. Terry is truly awesome. Wish I lived anywhere close to a book signing! Wyo is off the beaten trail I think.
Good for you, Terry! One of the best things I got to do during all my years working for Waldenbooks was to tell people who were buying your books what a truly wonderful human being you are. I saw evidence of this time and again during your books signings in our store and whenever you would stop by to pick up your daughter. This is simply another fine example of your generosity and connection to humanity.
