The Next Dr. Horrible?

Rosario Dawson in Gemini Division

Several weeks ago, I was introduced to Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible. Loved it! The story was great, the singing was great, the writing was great and the cast was great.

That’s not all that was great. For one of the first times that I’m aware of at least, a major talent in Hollywood brought a well-financed and well-acted story to the internet! We have theaters, yes. We have televisions, sure. But this was new and fresh content meant specifically to entertain via our computers—and it was done so well that I could see the writing on the wall before it hit.

Well, now it has hit! And the wall will probably never be the same again!

Here comes Gemini Division!

Distributed by NBC Digital Studios and produced by Electric Farm Entertainment, Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Men In Black II) is starring in a new internet-only driven sci-fi serial called Gemini Division. Like Dr. Horrible, you can only watch it on your computer. It is scheduled to be 50 webisodes told in 3-minute clips and unfolds what promises an intriguing, thriller of a story:

Shot entirely in front of a green screen, “Division” stars actress Rosario Dawson (“Sin City”) as a vice cop who becomes involved with the mysterious titular organization after she discovers her perfect boyfriend is actually an artificial life form known as a SIM.

Watch Episode I: Eyes Wide Open of Gemini Division!

Warranted, this is not like the silly fun found with Dr. Horrible; Gemini Division seems to be serious entertainment like Alias. But I’m hooked. I love Rosario Dawson anyway, but the way Episode I ended hooked me line and sinker! The green screen CGI allows for the story to go anywhere in the world—or possibly off-world—and that allows for some interesting storytelling possibly! From the first episode, it appears as though this show will be action-oriented but ultimately peruse ideas about what it means to be human and happy.

I’m on board, Gemini Division. Nice job!

Oh my goodness, another one? Could it be that we're seeing an awakening on the part of broadcast companies to the potential of the web as the new media-content-delivery system? Interesting...

I am definitely going to be checking this out, the story sounds like fun and Rosario Dawson sweetens the deal too. But three minute episodes? Sounds like a lot of cliffhangers.

The only odd thing is...why have I not heard more buzz surrounding this project? Sounds like a modest-at-least investment was made to produce this series.

My curiosity is piqued...

Hmmmm. Could be worth it, but it feels like something I'd forget about too easily. Three minutes is such a short time... On the other hand, letting the episodes build up before watching might be more to my liking. Hopefully they take it out of the 'I'm talking to you about my strange day from the comfort of my room' box and play around with it more. I'll be keeping tabs on this one.

Unfortunately this is another one that is "unavailable in your location". I guess if you are outside the US then you are out of luck here.

I am looking forward to it. The first two episodes were about 6 minutes a pop. I think they will also compile the episodes for each week. Right now they have the first two compiled together. You can see it at NBC, Hulu, SciFi website and on mobile.

Release schedule: Two episodes last week. Two episodes this next week, one on Monday and one on Tuesday. The interactive experience starts this coming Friday. Then they will be releasing a daily episode Monday-Thursday.

They will release 50 episodes. I liked Afterworld and I am looking forward to Gemini Division. Looks like they really are starting to rethink media in a digital media age!
