Suvudu in Review | Our Top Ten of 2008

It’s on to the new year and there’s plenty coming down the pipes*, but before we jump head first, let’s take one last look back on some of the stories that captivated both us, the posters, and you, the readers here on Suvudu.

Which posts captured your and our attention? Here’s how it broke down, top ten style:

The Top 10 Horror Movies of 2008
Consider this a list of must-view horror flicks from our previous year. Our resident horror expert, Matt Schwartz, counts down the ten best horror movies of the past year and tells you what sets them above the rest.

10 SF and Fantasy Writers Who Should be Nobel Prize Winners
Things got a bit touchy as the reactions came in to this one. Who knew the Nobel Prize could be this, well, entertaining? Feel free to continue adding comments, we love a good debate.

Origin of Urban Fantasy?
It would appear that a lot of you out there are like me - fascinated to find out that there’s another side to Raymond E. Feist’s and Terry Brook’s storytelling. It’s fun to “discover” things like this isn’t it?

Top Ten - Best Fashion in Science Fiction and Fantasy
Fashion week in Paris apparently has nothing on Fashion week on Tatooine…

What I Learned This Week Part 2 - A good cover letter is hard to find
It's no secret that you all love Betsy Mitchell's What I Learned This Week column, but her cover letter advice really took the cake. Both parts made our ten most popular posts. Unfortunately, that means there are no more excuses for poorly written letters. Good luck out there!

The Best Heavy Metal Songs Based on Fantasy Novels
With all apologies to Led Zeplin, who had a thing for Lord of the Rings, this is perhaps the most complete list you're going to find covering guitar-drenched-thunder-drumming-fantasy-loving rockers. Rock on, Tolkien!

What I Learned This Week Part 1 - A good cover letter is hard to find
Deja Vu? It's no secret that you all love Betsy Mitchell's What I Learned This Week column, but her cover letter advice really took the cake. Both parts made our ten most popular posts. Unfortunately, that means there are no more excuses for poorly written letters. Good luck out there!

Video: Steven Erikson (9/22/08)
All bad jokes aside, part of the fun of this site is that we get to bring you video and interviews of many, many different authors. From readings to book launches to one-on-ones, we try to bring the whole spectrum to your computer. This video of author Steven Erikson discussing and reading from his new book Toll the Hounds is a shining example and one that you made a top post in 2008.

What I Learned This Week - The smart author is willing to rewrite
Another great What I Learned This Week column from Betsy, about the importance of editing and listening to your editor. Anyone who has ever spent time inside a writer's forum knows the "My editor wants me to what?" stories; here's an editor's point of view.

Terry Brooks and The Soldier
This is one of those feel good stories that happens every so often and just makes you feel good. There's no agenda and no angle, just one person doing something good for another. Remember that last scene in Animal Farm where the animals couldn't tell the difference between the pigs and the farmers? Well, no pigs here, this one is about heroes. Nice.
