10 Days to Comic-Con: Day 7, Portfolio Reviews & On-The-Spot Interviews

So, we’ve seen that Comic-Con isn’t just about the comics, but did you know that it’s also a huge networking convention? Actually, yes, you probably did. To cut down on the confusion and impose a little order, Comic-Con International is nice enough to provide a Portfolio Review area (PR) where companies will speak with up-and-comers and review portfolios and, on occasion, interview you for a job on the spot.

So if you’re looking to break into an industry, attending Comic-Con might just be good for you career! How sweet is that? Anyway, what follows are a list of programs you may wish to attend if you’re trying to break in. Then, after the jump, comes a guide to the portfolio review area.

There’s a lot of information here, so let’s just jump right in. And of course, good luck to all of those out there who plan on bringing their portfolio - get out there and rock it!

Cartoon Network Studios
Purpose in participating in the review area is to give you feedback in preparing your portfolio for submission in the animation industry. Please target your portfolio to the area in which you wish to work. These sessions are meant only for artists serious in pursuing a career in animation and who have taken the time to compile a targeted portfolio. It is recommended that you show samples spotlighting the position you want to pursue (i.e. character design, storyboard, etc.)

Note: Due to a scheduling conflict Cartoon Network will be unable to conduct portfolio reviews on Saturday as shown in the Events Guide but has added a session on Sunday.

CinemaGraphix Entertainment
They are especially interested in pencilers who can ink their own work and who specialize in one or more of the following categories: horror, science fiction, good girl, action, or animation.

For serious consideration, please bring photocopied samples or sample digital files that can be left behind.

Committed Comics
Will review pencils, ink, colors, letters, as well as full projects. Writers, please see the website for details for writing submissions. Additional information and what to include in your portfolio can be found at www.CommittedComics.com.

Dark Horse Comics
Will be reviewing the storytelling work of professional-level comics artists. Consecutive story pages only (minimum of 5 pages required), with an eye toward storytelling as well as drawing skills. Please bring your most recent work.

Artists with cover paintings, inking or coloring samples, pin ups, or sketches are invited to submit work by following instructions at www.darkhorse.com/company/submissions.

It is suggested that this review be treated as a job interview.

Hasbro 3D Design/Sculpt Team is looking to review portfolios of talented sculptors with experience in the following:

• 3 3/4" action figures, 6" action figures 12" action figures
• Experience using multiple materials including "industry" waxes
• Experience working with multiple tools and hardware
• A strong understanding for manufacturing and draft considerations
• Silicone molding and Urethane casting experience
• Understanding of articulation and implementation
• Digital expertise including such programs as ZBrush, Freeform, Mudbox and Maya
• Passion for Hasbro brands and its licensed properties.

Will review portfolios of concept designers/artists, including character concepts as well as environment concepts.

Will conduct portfolio reviews, provide critiques, and offer tips for aspiring artists. Bring a portfolio selection of your best work.

Marvel Entertainment, Inc.
Will be reviewing portfolios of artists, inkers, and colorists for potential future work at the House of Ideas.

Bring copies of their artwork (no originals) to the Marvel Booth, #2429, throughout the show but no later than 7:00 PM on Saturday. A list of people with whom Marvel would like to speak further will be posted at the end of each day, Friday - Sunday.
