John Hughes

I apologize in advance, as this is not a normal Suvudu post. It’s 1:30 on Friday afternoon and I just learned John Hughes passed away last night. I’m stunned. His films were as much a part of my youth as my friends were. The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, and so many more still resonate through my life. Just yesterday, after I had not responded to a text message in a timely manner, my friend sent a follow up message that simply quoted the teacher from Ferris Bueller, “Anyone? Anyone?”.

While I only know the man through his work, this news still stings. My brother-in-law forwarded a blog post to me from a woman named Allison. Shortly after the release of The Breakfast Club Allison became pen pals with Mr. Hughes. She has written a very touching post that reveals what a great man he was as well as a filmmaker. If you are a fan and are feeling this loss as well, I encourage you to read Allison’s blog.

Dear Mr. Vernon,
We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. But we think you’re crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us… In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain…
and an athlete…
and a basket case…
a princess…
and a criminal…
Does that answer your question?

Sincerely yours,
The Breakfast Club.
