Labor Day is a long holiday weekend, meant for traveling, reading and super sales all over the place—from mattresses to furniture to clothes to electronics.
The book industry also partakes in these sales!
Borders is offering several weekend discounts and sales. Free shipping for purchases over $10. One free bargain book for every two purchased. And the coolest one:
- Buy 4 Manga or Graphic Novels, Get 5th Free!
My five suggestions:
- Watchmen by Alan Moore
- The Absolute Sandman by Neil Gaiman
- The Complete Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson
- Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
- Kingdom Come by Mark Waid
Happy Reading!

Shawn, your suggestions are great! I'll throw in these five ideas as well:
1. Mouse Guard: Fall 1152
- this one kicks off the series.
2. Bone by Jeff Smith
- I'd go with the omnibus edition here, but that's me wanting the whole story in one place.
3. Chiaroscuro by Troy Little
- If you can find it, it's fantastic.
4. Kurt Busiek's Astro City books
- Superheroes meet slice-of-life
5. Flight (any volume)
- the best collection of graphic short storytelling out there today.
And there are so many more, but I'll leave it at this list for now.
I was THIIIIIS close to putting Bone on there in place of Kingdom Come. :) THIIIIIS close!
And I have some Flight lying around my place somewhere. Perhaps I should give that at try. Where should I start, oh wise Kyle?
Oh I don't argue with your Kingdom Come recommendation, I hope people check it out! As for Flight, well you can't really go wrong with any of them, but my favorite thus far (mind you, I'm not done with #6 yet) is #5. I say that based on The Dragon, which remains my favorite of all stories I've seen in Flight (or at least tied with So Far, So Close from #3, which is beautiful in its simplicity).
Interestingly, The Dragon is a continuing story and you can read the previous installment, Tea, in Flight #3.
Oh! Also, our live chatters from a few weeks ago, Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier, both have stories in Flight #4! So you can check them out there.
The beauty of these books is that you can pick any up and read them and enjoy the segments, even though some of the stories are continuing sagas that appear throughout the flight series.
So, if you want my recommendation on a single book to read, I'd say go with #5. But if you have the inclination to, or if series continuity is a really, really big deal, #1 is the way to go.
