Star Trek XI is on DVD/Blu-Ray... this calls for more lens flare

Spock approves of the lens flare.

JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek reboot opened to critical acclaim this summer, and proved to be a shiny new entry for the franchise… but maybe too shiny for some viewers. If there was one (minor) criticism of the movie that seemed to be almost universal, it was Abrams’ use of lens flare. When clips of the movie originally leaked, AICN’s commenters chimed in with zingers from “holy lens flares!” to “Star Trek: Lens Flare Nine,” and even New York Magazine’s Vulture blog issued a warning to spare your eyeballs.

In a press conference, Abrams admitted the lens flare might have been a bit much, saying:

I know what you’re saying with the lens flares. It was one of those things… I wanted a visual system that felt unique. I know there are certain shots where even I watch and think, “Oh that’s ridiculous, that was too many.” But I love the idea that the future was so bright it couldn’t be contained in the frame.

Oh, JJ. In honor of the director’s (bright) vision and the new Star Trek reboot being released on DVD and Blu-Ray today—be still, my fangirl heart—why not celebrate with some lens flare of your own…on your Facebook page?

It’s just a few keyboard taps away…

The code isn't new, but it feels right for the occasion. When you're on your Facebook homepage, just click the following keys:

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Enter

When you scroll or hit the up or down buttons, you get your own (admittedly less flashy, but still fun) version of lens flare!

This code might feel familiar to old-school gamers: It's the Konami Code, originally used in the NES version of Contra, also known as the "30 lives code."

Sorry, you don't get 30 lives this time. But the lens flare is awesome. If it proves to be too much for you, just refresh your Facebook page.

And don't forget to watch Star Trek on DVD/Blu-Ray. Shades optional.
