Contest runs from 12:00:01 A.M. (EST) on January 18, 2011 to 11:59:59 P.M. (EST) on March 18, 2011.
I. WHO MAY ENTER
This Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States, excluding Puerto Rico, who are age 18 and over as of January 18, 2011. In addition, in order to be eligible for this Contest, as of January 18, 2011, entrants must not have entered themselves or on their behalf any contract, including publishing contracts, that may restrict their right to submit and/or publish their manuscript in connection with this Contest. Otherwise eligible entrants who subsequently enter into such contracts may be disqualified from winning. All federal, state and local regulations apply. Void wherever prohibited or restricted by law. Employees of Random House, Inc. and its parent company, assigns, subsidiaries or affiliates, and their immediate families and persons living in their household are not eligible to participate in this Contest.
II. HOW TO ENTER
To enter:
- 1. Complete the entry form (including name and e-mail address) at http://suvudu.com/edreview/ and follow the instructions.
- 2. After submitting this information, you will receive an email from info@suvudu.com. Submit a work of speculative adult fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror or paranormal romance) from 50,000 to 150,000 words in length to this email address as a PDF (preferable) or Microsoft Word file. Please include your name and the same e-mail address used in the entry form. The work must not have been previously published. The work may be co-authored, provided that only one author will be selected as the winner and such winner must own or control all publication rights in the work in all formats and media at time of winner notification. The work may not consist of content that is crowd-sourced or user-generated.
LIMIT ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. If multiple entries are received from any person in violation of these rules, all such entries will be disqualified. All entries must be received by the entry deadline. In the event of a dispute about entries submitted by multiple individuals using the same e-mail account, entry will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized subscriber of the e-mail account used to enter the Contest at the actual time of entry. The authorized e-mail account subscriber is deemed to be the natural person who is assigned an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses or the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address. Entries generated by script, macro, robotic, programmed, or any other automated means are prohibited and will be disqualified.
III. PRIZES AND WINNER NOTIFICATION
One Grand Prize Winner and three Runner Up Winners will be selected on or about May 13, 2011, by members of Sponsor's editorial department. Entries will be judged on the basis of originality, creativity and writing style. GRAND PRIZE (1): A full edit of the work by Betsy Mitchell, Editor in Chief of Del Rey Publishing and a set of Del Rey books selected by Sponsor. Approximate Retail Value (ARV): $2250. RUNNER UP PRIZES (3): A set of Del Rey Books selected by Sponsor. ARV: $250.
Winners will be required to complete, execute and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release within seven (7) days of the date of notification. Failure to execute and return this Affidavit and Release by the deadline will result in disqualification, and sponsor reserves the right to select an alternate winner in such circumstance. No substitution of any prizes will be offered. No prize transfer permitted. If a prize is unavailable, Sponsor reserves the sole right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value. All taxes, fees, and surcharges on prizes are the sole responsibility of the winners.
IV. GENERAL CONDITIONS AND WARRANTIES
Entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules. By accepting the Grand Prize, the Grand Prize Winner grants to Sponsor and its licensees and assigns, a right of first refusal to publish the work submitted as part of this Contest in all formats (such grant to be confirmed in writing, in addition to the Affidavit of Eligibility and Release). The Grand Prize Winner agrees not to submit his/her work to any third party, directly or indirectly, until Sponsor has been provided the first opportunity to either make an offer to publish or refuse to publish such work. If Sponsor refuses to publish the work, or if Sponsor and the Grand Prize Winner cannot agree on a mutually agreeable publishing agreement, the Grand Prize Winner shall be free to submit the work elsewhere. By participating in this Contents, entrants warrant that their works are their original work and are not owned by any other person or entity; do not violate any law or regulation; and do not infringe the rights of any person or entity, including, but not limited to, any copyright or trademark rights and/or rights of privacy or publicity. By participating and accepting a prize the winners grant to Sponsor and those acting pursuant to the authority of Sponsor, the right to print, publish, broadcast, and use, worldwide in any media now known or hereafter developed the winner's name and biographical information for advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation or review.
V. RELEASE OF LIABILITY
All entrants agree to hold harmless and release Random House and its parent company, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, agents, and employees; all others associated with the development and execution of this Contest from any and all liability with respect to or in any way arising from this Contest, participation in any Contest-related activity and/or delivery/misdelivery, acceptance, possession, use, or misuse of prize, including, but not limited to, liability for personal injury, bodily injury, including wrongful death or disability; damage to property; and damage or loss of any other kind. Sponsor is not responsible for prize quality or utility. Sponsor is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Web-site users, by any of the equipment or programming associated with or used in the Contest, or by any technical or human error that may occur in the processing of submissions in the Contest. Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error; omission; interruption; deletion; defect; delay in operation or transmission; communications-line failure; or the theft destruction, unauthorized access to or alteration of entries. Sponsor is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines; computer online systems, servers, or providers; computer equipment or software; or failure of e-mail or entry on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Web site or combination thereof, including injury or damage to the participant's or to any person's computer related to or resulting from participating or downloading materials from this Web site or Contest. Sponsor is not responsible for user cheating or fraud by any entrants. Any activities intended to disrupt or interfere with the proper play of the Contest or defraud Sponsor in any way will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Participants who engage in any of the foregoing activities will be disqualified and will forfeit any prizes won. If, for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned due to, but without limitation, infection by computer virus, worm, or bugs; tampering, unauthorized intervention; fraud; technical failures; or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsor that, in the sole opinion of Sponsor, could corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest.
VI. WINNERS LIST
For the names of the winners, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Suvudu Writing Contest, c/o Suvudu, Random House, Inc., 1745 Broadway, New York, NY 10019 by June 10, 2011. Washington and Vermont residents may omit return postage.
