Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Comics-based Movies of 2009?

Vote 0 Votes

I know I'm jumping the gun here, but we've already got three quarters of the year under our belts here and I thought it might be cool to start discussing favorite sci-fi/fantasy/comics movies from the past year. Plus, since this is a forum thread, we can keep it going until the end of 2009. Ah, the beauty of technology. So, let's hear it! Your nom for the best SF/F/C movie of the year thus far? Or maybe you think one that's coming up is gonna be awesome... whatever floats your boat.

  • The year isn't even over and there's already so many to choose from. I won't name a ton (I'll let others chime in with some...), but here are two that I really enjoyed:

Watchmen: call me all the names in the book that you want to, this movie worked for me better than the book did. I have complicated feelings about the Watchmen graphic novel. I think that the story is wonderful, but the art leaves me cold. I know that the art is a big selling point for some; as an artistic choice it's probably deconstructing comics in the same way that the prose story was attempting. But it just doesn't work for me. This movie solved that problem and managed to stay about 98% true to the book. Love it, long running time and all.

Coraline: We've come such a long way in claymation, puppetry, and digital animation. If you don't believe me, then do what I did: rent Coraline and rent The Nightmare Before Christmas and watch them back to back. You'll be amazed at the differences. Anyway, Coraline is an engaging movie in which I bought into completely. It was fun when it should be fun, it was menacing when it should have been menacing, all without going overboard. It's one of my favorite things of 2009.

  • Coraline was wonderful.

    Zombieland was frickin' hilarious.

Up was just uplifting (ha ha), like every Pixar movie is.

I am really hoping that Where the Wild Things Are is done well! Other than that, this year has been pretty boring for us really. I still haven't seen District 9 or 9.

  • before this weekend, I would have listed "District 9" as my fav of 2009, with Watchmen a close second.
Saw Avatar this weekend and it rocketed to the top. (especially the 3d version).
Its been a surprisingly good year for movies, my daughter "dragged" me to Coraline and now when she puts in the DVD at least once a week I actually still watch with her, GREAT movie. Up was good too.

  • Hard to choose from among so many great movies [ i found a big list on كيف اكون جميلة ] -- but if I have to pick one, I'll go with a sentimental favorite: Avatar .
