So it seems we've sparked a few debates with this little Cage Match venture.
One of the main questions seems to be: Where is this character?
Well, that's what we want to know, too. So if you think there's a character we've "snubbed," tell us who, and why they deserved to be in Cage Match 2010.
And, if you're really feeling ambitious, let us know who they should have replaced!

I think the characters are just fine, I would only like to comment on Jaime Lannister, he should have been chosen with both hands as all the other characters are in full use of their abilities; Aragorn has his big sword, Ged is the full wizzard. Just my opinion
I agree but it looks like Lannister is doing fine just one hand...
I really find this post very much fascinating. I am a eager watcher of the cage matches, The naot they wear are just so cool. I used to watch it regularly every year and I am really looking forward to the exclusive matches of this year too. I am supporting the Jean Tannen. He is a real tough man with an incredibly good fighting spirit. I really appreciate the fact that you actually made me remember about the coming matches. I really look forward to more awesome posts like this.
First of all, great job with the cage matches so far. The simulations are a great read and well thought
out.
Since you asked, though, I am a little disappointed that Harry Potter and and Lord of the Rings are over-represented. If you wanted more female representation, there's Vi Sovari from the Night Angel trilogy, who could easily replace either of the Harry Potter characters.
Secondly, I love Name of the Wind, but it's probably a little premature to include Kvothe, as we really don't know what he can do yet. I am eagerly awaiting the bracket on Wednesday to see your take on him, and how it shakes out, though.
Finally, I'm not so certain it should have been a Fantasy and SciFi list, as including some SciFi characters just opens up the debate too much (where would HAL 9000 fit in, and what would Teela Brown's genetic predisposition to luck do to the brackets?). Maybe next time there could be a Fantasy bracket and a SciFi bracket, and the winner of each could go head to head...
Anyways, great work so far. I am really enjoying the matches, and all the excellent commentary from the readers.
Great stuff so far! I can't imagine the nightmare of trying to pick 32 characters that everyone could agree on how they should be seeded. Hat's off to you on that!
For future matches, I would suggest using categories... pure swordsman vs pure swordsman, mage vs mage, demi-god vs demigod... that sort of thing.
So who'd you miss?
The Bloody Nine from Joe Abercrombie.
Istvan DiVega from Paul Edwin Zimmer.
Heinlein's Lazarus Long.
Sven Tveskoeg from David Gunn's Death's Head series.
Angus Thermopyle badass cyborg from Stephen R Donaldson's Gap Cycle.
R. E. Howard's Solomon Kane.
Molly Metacalf from Simon R Green.
George Powhatan from David Brin's The Postman.
Well, I thought you did a good job of including people from many universes (universi, universee?). That said, I would have liked to see the following:
The Lady and/or Soulcatcher from Glen Cook
Pug/Milamber and/or Tomas from Ravmond E Feist
Kellhus from Scott Bakker
The Crimson King from Stephen King
The characters you have are great, but... It would of been nice to include
1. Tyrion Lannister- he has problem solving skills and despite his disabilities can recruit people to his cause. I've seen other characters have "help"(like Drizzt). Tyrion can have Bronn and the Moon Men to step in. Also despite getting cramps and aches in his legs he can wield a battle axe and a crossbow if comes down to a hard crunch. Remember, Tyrion has avoided executed execution twice and death in battle. He was the major tactician in the battle of Blackwater.
2. Jon Snow. He has Longclaw and his Direwolf Ghost. His helpers could include Samwell Tarly and Pyp and Grenn.
3. Captain Kirk with Spock, McCoy adn Scotty. Imagine if they met up with Cthulu!.
4. Worf. He's great hand to hand,with a phaser, and a Battleth.
5. The Borg Collective. Resistance is futile. It'd be kinda sad to see Gandalf assimilated though.
StarTrek (the old ones) sucks! The new one is RAD!
It's depressing that Corwin from Roger Zelazny's Amber series was not chosen. Those books are so underrated.
It's depressing that Corwin from Roger Zelazny's Amber series was not chosen. Those books are so underrated.
I'm surprised that Steven Erikson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen" isn't represented in these matches. i would have thought with the number of characters with otherworldly power, one of them would have made the cut. Here's just a few suggestions.
1) Quick Ben. He has access to twelve Warrens, and can use up to seven of them at once.
2) Ganoes Paran, Master of the Deck. He can bend reality to his will.
3) Karsa Orlong. He carries around a giant sword, and has the chains of the thousands of souls he's killed following him spiritually.
4) Rhulad Sengar. Has a sword fused to his hand that he can't drop that makes him immortal. Anytime someone kills him, he comes back to life even stronger.
5) Icarium. has been around for thousands of years, is capable of drawing on his rage as a way to increase his power, and is so strong that he can wound the Warrens from which magic is drawn. He carries Warren-enchanted arrows capable of killing dragons.
I also second the Kellhus nomination.
I second the Malazan suite of characters... and you must throw Anomander Rake into the list of contenders from that series.
FitzChivalry.
Hardly overpowered.
Axe on the physical side. The Wit and Skilling on the supernatural side.
He's more interesting than several characters in the match.
Should replace Hermione, and should go against un-gimped two-handed Jaime. Much more interesting fight. Not nearly Jaime's match with a blade (well - an axe,) but the Skill evens it out...
Hermione is boring.
Jaime could lose his remaining hand, an entire leg, and his left eye and fight while carrying Tyrion on his back and he'd still take dumps on Hermione 7 days a week.
7 days.
A week.
First off I'd like to say that the mixing of the magical/non-magical characters should be held off until the final. Have two 16 person brackets with 1-16 seeds in them, one for magical folk, one for non-magical. Then have the winners of these two rounds duke it out.
As for characters you could have used, I'd list:
Bloody Nine
Pug
Belgarion
Daenerys Targaryen and her Dragons
Egwene (Or Nyn... her)
Gaborn Val Orden (or Raj Ahten)
Gaius Octavian
And Characters you could have left out:
Hermione: Much more powerful HP wizards, and you already have Dumbly. Egwene in her place.
Arthur Dent: Funny... but not when there are others left out. Pug!
Wee Free Men: Groups of men shouldn't count, and 1v1 they are toast. Raj Ahten!
Lyra: Really? A nine year old who can talk? Daenerys at least has dragons!
Kvothe: Maybe in the 2012 edition when we find out how bad ass he is. Bloody 9 in his place!
I agree that Jamie beats Hermi... but, as much as I appreciate the inclusion of the awesomeness that is Jamie Lannister, the fact remains that there are simply a handful of goon-squad sword-swingers that are simply better than him already in the lists... they should have taken the Mountain that Rides, since apparently running Gregor through with a normally fatal death-blow just makes him mad...
I also agree that any number of characters from Steven Erickson's Malazan series would have been a tremendously welcome addition to this list... Raest, Anomander, Gruntle, Hood (you have Ctuthulu after all), First Sword of the Empire, etc...
Something that I have not seen that would have been nice just for inclusion is any of the character's from David Gemmel's novels... Druss, Waylander, Skillganon, ect... No real threat to win, but certainly great characters in an epic set of stories...
Raj Ahten would have been nice too... or the Earth King himself...
Belgarath,Polgara,or Belgarion - David Eddings
Pug/Milambar, or Tomas - Raymond Feist
Aegon the Conqueror - GRRM
Sauron, Melkor/Morgoth, Turin Turambar - JRRT
Simon/Seoman or Ineluki - Tad Williams
Turin would be awesome. I think Jiriki from Osten Ard as well. And I'll say it again...Uther Doul from Mieville's The Scar. Straight up bad.
Vampire wise, why is everyone forgetting Simon Ysidro from Hambly's Those Who Hunt the Night. Another favorite. I'd like to see him against Drizzt.
I agree with all of the posts thus far, A Song of Ice and Fire should be represented twice if Lord of the Rings is listed twice. I consider GRRM one of my favorite authors and I know quite a few of you would agree, these two epics stand at the least parallel in the fantasy world. I second all characters listed from Westoros: Daenerys, Gregor, The Hound, Tyrion, Beric, Thoros, Drogo and his Bloodriders, Jon Stark...even Rickon would probably destroy the witch girl.
Also, I agree with Kellhus being a ridiculously efficient character in Scott Bakkers books (Although the series was somewhat disappointing)
John Marco's Richius Vantran, from Tyrants and Kings series, is another underrated character I wish I could vote for, as well as Lukien and Akeela and company from Eyes of God series. Although some might not know of these books, or like them, there are many characters unrecognized from this amazing author.
There are too many characters to list and some easily forgotten in the long run, I think for the next installment of this event the subject should be revisited so that none are left out and everybody can be happy. Finally, I agree with separating the character groups, SciFi with SciFi and Fantasy with Fantasy (or magic vs magic / sword vs sword etc etc), because even though I'd love to see that skinny girl from Harry Potter become a head shorter, I think we all would like to see a fair fight.
-Great stuff so far, wouldn't change a thing at this point. I even signed up just to post this.
These are all great points--and believe me, we debated pretty much every one of them during the planning stages. Many of the characters people have listed here were (vehemently; heatedly; pig-headedly--[insert adjective here]) considered. Ultimately, we thought this group not only offered the greatest range of some of the best and biggest authors in the SF/F genre, but also would--to be honest--be the most fun to write up.
Of course we wanted Arthur Dent to fight the Shrike. Of course we thought it'd be funny to see Cthulu battling a little girl.
So yes, tough decisions were made. But, ultimately, I think the decisions are enjoyable.
For one thing, how many of you (and this goes out to everyone in the forum) have read all these books? Tell me you're not interested in at least one character you aren't too familiar with.
For another thing, how often do we get to have these kinds of conversations? Let's face it--us nerds need an outlet, and that's one of the main reasons Kaitlin and I decided this would be a good idea in the first place.
Finally--you said, BagO: this isn't the only time we're going to do this. Clearly a ton of people are enjoying the matches (or enjoying not enjoying the matches), and so there will be other chances for other characters to make it into the Cage. Of this you can be certain.
But all of these suggestions are being listened to--we're not the end-all, be-all of SF and F.
We just like to pretend we are. :)
The match could have been bigger, so few spots, so many good choices.
The Hound or John Snow (with Ghost) might have been a better choice to represent A Song of Ice and Fire because of Lannister's "issue".
A few that I'd have added:
Sparhawk (Various books) by David Eddings
Kylar Stern (Night Angel Trilogy) by Brent Weeks
Vin (Mistborn Trilogy) by Brandon Sanderson
For the most part, some good choices, but a few odd ones as well.
Ok I don't feel offended by this but while I noticed that you had Anita Blake placed in the battle I sniffed just a little and thought that it would have actually been a lot cooler to see it be Edward. Then again I stopped reading the series years ago and he's probably not the character he used to be but Edwards a bad ass. I would have especially loved to have seen it where he gets to go up against the glittering vampire of the same name.
I'm truly puzzled at how Fitz Chivalry Farseer was left out? His name must have been throw out as a suggestion, but how did he get cut? I also agree that 2 characters from LOTR is one too many. And as far as magicians go why not Akkarin from Trudi Canavan's Black Magician trilogy? It would have been more interesting than Hermione.
This would be unwieldy (but what in a democracy isn't?), but it would be fun (for me at least) for next time to have qualifying rounds that involved characters having to make it out of their own universe. Does Gandalf really make it to the big dance over Aragorn? Do the Wee Free Men make it over Rincewind? There could be a couple at large bids for characters that lost but received many votes in defeat.
Characters I'd like to see...
Anton Gorodetsky (Night Watch)
Apt, Anomander Rake (Malazan)
and if we are including kids lit then
Will Stanton (Dark is Rising)
I'll leave out characters from books that were included (although I am truly puzzled why Polgara was picked instead of another Belgariad/Malorean character) Characters I'd like to have seen:
Pug or Tomas from the Riftwar Saga
Corwin or Random from the Chronicles of Amber
Josua Lackhand or Pryrates from Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn
Sparhawk from the Elenium
FitzChivalry Farseer
Trent Castaveras from The Long Run
I have to say, Jaime Lannister should have use of both hands. That's my big grievance, Jaime fanboy that I am. I don't really see the point in decreasing his power by such a radical amount against other characters who are clearly at the top of their game. I realize it's probably a matter of standardization, just grabbing everyone at the state they appear in currently, but...still, if Jaime was going to be picked, he should have had his abilities intact. Otherwise one of the Cleganes, Jon Snow, or perhaps Loras Tyrell might have been a better choice.
On other charries...
FitzChivalry Farseer
Joscelin Verreuil
Hunter (Neverwhere)
I forgot about Joscelin, but he would certainly fit right in!
I second the call for Anomander of Malazan (in)fame, and would like to add the indomitable Rincewind from the Diskworld and how-could-you-miss-him Beowulf from, well, Beowulf
This is pretty good only there's one really big problem... ya got no Harry F*&%ing Potter! Missed huge with that one. Makes me question this entire match
We talked about Harry--believe me, I fought tooth and nail to include Harry and not Hermione. But I was convinced (reluctantly, as I'm super-stubborn), that Hermione is the more powerful wizard, according to the books. So Harry got booted in favor of Ms. Granger.
You're not super stubborn enough. Although Hermione is indeed a more powerful witch than Harry is a wizard, how many one on one fights did Hermione win? Harry's clearly the better dueler. Though if limited to one from the series, Dumbledore makes a more powerful inclusion, and Snape might be more interesting than either Harry or Hermione as well.
Bran/Hodor/Summer might be a good combo eventually, especially if we ever see them develop further along. Save this one for a future year, after Dance with Dragons is out, perhaps?
Granny Weatherwax would be fun, and more so now that the Wee Free Men are sadly gone.
Someone from American Gods (Gaiman) might be fun to write/read about as well.
i agree that there should have been a fantasy side and a sci-fi (or is it syfi now i'm confused) of the bracket. and on that sci-fi side there should have been at least one star wars character. i assume this list requires characters originate in literature first but still, a finals match between rand al'thor and darth vader would be epic!
Pfft@Harry
You're talking about cage matches, not angst-ridden journeys through the 'magical' process of puberty.
Colbey Calistinsson
Super Duncan/Paul Atredies
Shadow
Thomas Covenant
Joshua Calvert
as per my post on front page.
I also think, as I said out there, that next year maybe we can vote ahead of time for heroes represented, then the seeds, the the matches. Perhaps thats too much, but really, you need a better seeding comittee. Think of the divisional championships! you want them to be exciting!
Further, your choice of handicapping Jaime Lannister is nearly unforgivable, especially if he loses to the tartlet. GRRM's books are some of the most popular, best written, gritty, realistic books out there. Pefect for cage match contestants...so long as you don't handicap them.
Happy to see Pug, Corwin and Thomas Covenant making others lists. I would also add the following for consideration:
Morgan, Prince of Hed
The Gray Mouser
Feanor
Achillies
and either Aiken Drum or Marc Remillard
I love seeing a george rr martin character in the lists! that said, why did it have to be jaime? He only has martial prowess to his side, and even that you kinda took away from him by using the one handed version, how's he ever supposed to beat cthulu in the second round? I'd like to see john snow. He has most the martial prowess of jaime lannister, but with the addition of ghost and his changeling abilities he has more skills to come at the lists with, much like many of the other characters in the brackets.
replace jaime lannister with john snow!
Again (and I realize I'll be saying this until I'm blue in the face like The Wee Free Men), this was definitely something we debated. Originally we had FOUR GRRM characters (when we were thinking 64), and Jon Snow was definitely up there (as where the Mountain that Rides and Daenerys), but we had to pare it down, and thought Jaime (especially pre-chopped-hand Jaime) was the "greatest knight in the land."
And Jon Snow's kind of boring. :)
dpomerico, While I don't disagree that Jon can be a little boring, he is a warg with a dire wolf!
The real out rage is that there isn't one person from Malazan in this who thing!
There is no wizard on this list that can run with Quick Ben (he controls 12 warrens, which are realms all on their own, and can pull 7 at a time)!
Also, Karsa would have work just about every one on this list. He has a sword that eats souls and gains power from them and he can shrug off magic! No magic can hurt him, come on, how can he not be in this fight?!?
I would have liked to see someone from Sword of Truth. Zed, Shota, Emperor Jagang.
Dude, Kahlan? Richard's freakin' wife?
I love the brackets, but I think you should group brackets with similar fighting genres. While having Cthulhu and Lyra Silvertongue or The Shrike and Arthur Dent fight is great fun in the end you know it will be the gods and semi-gods (Cthulhu, Aslan, Gandalf, Rand (hey, he can tap the true source, that gives him semi-god status)) duking it out while everyone else is left squished or vaporized.
I suggest four brackets to even the score.
1. Fantasy bracket - characters using classic fighting weapons, like blade, blunt and bow, no magic allowed.
2. Magical bracket - characters who use no weapons but wit and magic.
3. SciFi bracket - characters who use futuristic weapons, can include robots, cyborgs, etc.
4. God bracket - a battle of the literary pantheons fighting with the fate of the universe hanging in the balance.
Just my $0.02.
I defenitely agree
I think we all understand and respect your debates over the characters that should be included and the amount of time/effort it takes to create this contest. I agree with everything and everybody that has been listed so far (with the exception of Harry Potter), this cage match is something that will evolve into something bigger eventually (I hope sooner than later). Lastly, I agree highly with the suggestion of more seeders for this, if we are gonna vote we should at least be able to have our heros included (and fairly matched). I love reading this forum, makes my day. :)
what no Dune? God Emperor ftw! I guess he does have that one pretty obvious water weakness... maybe young leto II/sandworm before water killed him?
Although I don't know who he would replace, he'd have to be top ten right? But then all you have to do is sprinkle him with water, so maybe not...
Overall this is an awesome concept, but just a minor quibble, waaaaay too much fantasy and not enough sci-fi! go shrike!
Final: Shrike vs Chtulhu :-)
I would love to see Corwin of Amber added but Merlin may be a better choice due to Ghostwheel and the ability to use both the Pattern and the Logrus.
There are many different versions of Death that would work well.
Bink from Xanth would be potentially amusing.
Anasi from American Gods would also be fun.
The list could use The Great Skeeve from Aspirin's Myth series.
The God Emperor Leto might be a bit much, but a young Leto II, Paul, or an unlimited number of Duncan Idaho would provide a serious challenge.
Bloody Nine would have been interesting
There's no excuse for not having the Kwisatz Haderach (the original Rand al'Thor)
Definitely Karsa Orlong or Anomander Rake from the Malazan series should have been there
Also - I think the best GRRM character to be in this would have been Tyrion - brains over brawn; there are few endearing bastards in the fantasy world that compare to Tyrion
Have you guys thought about perhaps putting in Hercules? He is, after all, the original doomed hero. Of course, then you have to consider Ghilgamesh and others, but I feel Hercules would have been an interesting choice.
Another slightly strange suggestion perhaps, but ... why not Death (at least the Terry Pratchett one). It would have been fun to debate who can beat him.
I believe at least one character from Terry Brook's Landover series should have been included, like Strabo the Dragon, or even better, Edgewood Dirk the Prism Cat. They are two very interesting and powerful characters.
I, like many others, think that this tournament should be split up into different groups. Jammrock's suggestion of these being Fantasy, Magical, God and Sci-Fi sounds like a good one to me. At the moment it isn't that interesting, there are a few uber characters (e.g. Cthulhu,Aslan), who will get to the end and win. It has been put forward by dpomerico that these were meant to be funny match-ups, but I'd much rather have fun/interesting match-ups where the winner isn't so clear. It would be much more entertaining to see who is the greatest warrior, or greatest god-like character, rather than how much can a god-character win by in a poll against a little girl.
Also, what's with putting Jaime up without a hand? If the reason was because it is his current state, I would suggest that Dumbledore should be dead. All the characters should be at their best.
Moving finally onto the question asked, I would like to have seen Corwin from the Amber series, FitzChivalry Farseer, Voldemort (replacing Hermione), Sauron and probably many others I haven't thought of yet.
Mycroft Holmes (Heinlein)
FitzChivalry (Hobb)
Hawk Hunter (Maloney ... anybody?)
First things first: Thanks for hosting this contest - I found several characters/ novels I have to start reading soon, and have a lot of fun! But you want to know who is missing:
I miss Thargor/Orlando or Dread from Otherland and Fitzchivalry Farseer. I also would have loved to see Paragon from Liveship Traders, though it may be difficult to pair him up. He's a ship, in the end...
I would have them replace Hermione Granger, and Nancy (though I had great fun reading his fight, and haven't read the book, so its pure prejudice). Maybe Haplo, too, but I never finished that series.
And I would have replaced the Wee Free Men with either Death, Granny Weatherwax or the Luggage.
And to my very favourite GRRM: difficult choice, because a lot of the tough fighters aren't POVs, and I think the one who represents the series here should be - therefore I like your choice of Jaime for now. We'll have to see who will come out on top when the Song is finished.
My 2 cents:
1. No duplicates from the same series. Did anyone think for a minute that Aragorn could beat Gandalf or Hermione could Dumbledore? Also, that gives us the change to see two more series featured.
2. No gods from myth, no characters from legend, no comic book characters, no TV series characters, no movie characters. I saw someone suggest an African god, Star Trek characters, ect. - please, no. I have nothing against any of those forms of media, but once you open the floodgates, this becomes too unwieldy. The same goes for King Arthur, Beowulf, Achilles, ect.
3. Characters that I would love to see next time:
-Pug/Milamber or Tomas
-Paul Atredies
-Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever
-Lestat
-Sparhawk
This was a great idea and loads of fun to read. Thanks!
-Swift
Lestat would have been rather cool to see. Certainly beets the hell out of that Edward brat. Sorry really have a hate on here.
Also someone had mentioned star wars wich I thought would have been a cool addition as well. Come one we could have used some vader or fett. Anyone really, it would have been cool but it seems the format came form those based on books first. Otherwise I might have also said Spike as well.
You know who else could have been cool Michael from Dresden Files sans crippledness. He did have that sword and all.
Yeah I'm thinking of all of this just a little at a time.
I'm surprised that Merlin, from any series about Merlin, didn't make it. Specifically Merlin from Mary Stewart's 'The Hollow Hills'.
What about people from the Wild Cards universe.
The Great and Powerful Turtle
Fortunato
Astronomer
Demise
It would also be fun to see Discworld more represented Wee Free Men are cool and all but…
Commander Sam Vimes (will kill if son or wife is threatened).
Lu Tze (always remember rule number one).
Pug is conspicuously absent. All in all though, nicely done.
Other characters that would have been nice to see:
Waylander or Druss
Kylar Stern
Sparhawk
Logen Ninefingers
I really think that Joe Abercrombie's books should have had a character or two. Specifically Logen Ninefingers or Nicomo Cosca.
Also White Rose from the Black Company.
First of all, I love what you guys have put together here. It's great to revisit old favorites and see new challengers who I'm unfamiliar with. I think you did a great job with the initial match-ups, and peppering the character line-up with strong women (almost impossible to find in fantasy literature). If you do it again, here are a couple of possibilities to include:
Pug/Milamber (Raymond E Feist, Riftwar Saga)
Seyonne (Carol Berg, Rai Kirah series)
Anton (Nightwatch Series)
Stile (Piers Anthony, Split Infinity)
Anyone from Xanth (Piers Anthony)
Fitz Chivalry (Robin Cook, Assassin's Apprentice)
Thomas Covenant (Stephen Donaldson, Thomas Covenant series)
Corwin or Merlin (Roger Zelazny, Amber series)
Just a couple of ideas
Lots of fun, but yeah, you need to pair muscle to muscle and magic to magic, 'cos in a fight situation 8 out of 10 times, magic's gonna kick your ass (the other two everyone explodes, so it could be a win...)
Plus, you might want to separate comedy from straight fiction, as often comedic heroes win despite innate ineptness!
I thought of a few contenders...
some of them aren't real heavyweights, but given some of the present competition, I thought them appropriate.
hawk and fisher (tag team?)
john taylor
eddie drood
kilamandaros (c'mon. she punches dragon skulls in.)
dassembrae (Ascendant and badass with a sword.)
kallor
anomander rake
karse orlong
icarium
quick ben
iscarl pust
brys beddict
the seguleh first (yes. please.)
cotillion
lostara yil
sorry
kalam mekhar
sinn
grub
(there are more from the Malazan books, but I see where there could be a problem deciding which ones to take...)
Rudy McKenzie of Clan McKenzie (the Lady's Sword)
I love this list. Perhaps for future matchups, you can consider:
Paul Atreides from Dune, for the classic.
Rachel Morgan from Kim Harrison's The Hallows series, for urban fantasy.
and
Commissar Caiphas Cain, from Sandy Mitchell's Warhammer 40k books.
Great idea. For the future list, you may think about
-Paul Atreides
-Fitzchivalry Farseer
-Satan SaDiablo
-granny Weatherwax
Anasûrimbor Kellhus , for sure should have been included.
Lazarus Long from Time Enough From Love by Heinlein.
second for Joscelin Verriuel from Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series.
Another thing thats been bothering me. If this cage match is based off of books (or so it seems), then where is Vader and Skywalker? Star Wars (A New Hope) was a books before it was a movie... I think I have the answer! It seems clear to me that if Vader and Skywalker were included the two would no dout meet in the final match, and of course we have seen that before...twice. This had to be your reasoning (But I would have loved to see a round three!). You could have even thrown in Anakin and the Emperor and then there would be an all Star Wars Final Four!!!!!!!
Only one I can think of for the moment:
Severian (Gene Wolfe) would have proved a match for most in this contest.
The character I'd love to see in the cage matches is Phedra no Delaunay from Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series. She'd just sleep her way to the top. Any beating she takes would only excite her.
I think the following characters should be included:
Michael Valentine Smith - Stranger in a Strange Land - can manipulate time and space with his mind
Vanyel Askevron - The Heralds of Valdemar - the last Herald-Mage and with Yfandes very powerful
Belgarion - The Belgariad - he is the godslayer after all
Kethry - The Heralds of Valdemar - with the sword Need, she would be nigh on impossible to beat!
Elspeth - the first Herald-Mage since Vanyel and her companion is Grove Born - very powerful
It - It - the creepiest monster ever!
Friday - Friday - genetically engineered human - very fast, strong, smart and sexy
Maybe even a Pak protector or two
anyway - these are some of the folks I'd like to see
I think that there should've been more Harry Potter characters.and maybe seperate the characters in to catergories like non magic and magic people so it'll be more fair.
Another vote for Gemmell charaters ala. waylander, skilgannon, druss etc.
As a suggestion i think there should be different divisions for characters with magical/superhuman properties and characters that don't (or only with limited such abilities).
I know it was 'random' but personally i thought the Hermione v Jaime matchup was ridiculous. Apart from the fact that Hermione has magical abilities and Jaime doesn't, Hermione isn't a killer. Hell, let alone Jaime (without his swordhand) any common person could take out Hermione (magic or no magic).
I think a separate league for characters from Gemmell's Drenai realm, Erikson's Malazan book of the fallen, and Martin's A song of ice and fire (and like characters) would be appropriate.
In regards to Jaime (while I'm a big fan), Jaime without his swordhand (or until he can fight with his leftie) can't steal candy from a baby if he wanted to let alone take on the likes of Druss, skilgannon, karsa orlong. From A song of ice and fire, Arthur Dayne may have been a more appropriate rep.
I haven't seen anyone mention of any Kirkpatrick's work so I thought I would throw in a few.
Kannwar the Destroyer
Keppia
Umu
Husk/Deorc (while drawing power from beyond the Wall)
The Most High - three of these are gods in case anyone is unclear.
Okay, yes to all the suggestions of Paul Atreides. If we can have Cthulu and Aslan, he should get in as well. Take him from earlier on in the series, if you think he's too uber.
The Wee Free Men should not be in there as they're not a single entity. It's a cage match, not a brawl. I agree with all the suggestions that only one character per series should participate. I'd say can both Hermione and Dumbledore and put in Voldemort. I'd want to see him against one of the gunslingers. It'd be fun to see who could shoot/yell avada kedavra faster.
Also, no Edward Cullen please. As much as I'd like to see him get pummeled, it would be a more interesting match if the vampire in question were Lestat or Akasha.
I think Richard Rahl should replace Kahlan for the exclusive reason that I want to see Richard and Rand fight to the death... from very VERY far away. I know they're very similar characters but it'd just be way too awesome to see two magical nukes going at it.
I'd like to see Etjole Ehomba from the Journeys of the Catechist trilogy. He can summon flying sharks, bested an evil moving sand dune, knocked a giant into low earth-orbit, and many other crazy stunts. Him against anyone (including Cthulu) would be extremely interesting.
Ummm also Xena instead of Conan. Cause we need more girls and she's kinda like Conan with boobs... kinda... okay that disturbed me deeply.
Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning.
Glaring oversight.
I have to second the props shouted out by all above. this is a awesome concept and list. just a plug, if you are going to create a pure non magical fighter bracket in the future then mat, mat, mat. the prince of the ravens is a better pure fighter than the dragon (and more fun to read about besides).
other suggestions:
allanon
the more humane bad guy from tigana (mind is a blank)
arithon s' fallon or any member of the fellowship of seven (davien the betrayer might be fun:)
f'lar and his dragon
cotillion
Eve Dallas killed her licentious father @8 yrs of age ,Kick ass Homicide detective in 2060. In Death Series(on book 22 in the series I think).
Elana Michaels - Only female werewof in existence.
Enforcer to kill or recruit wild rogue male werewolves
Latest novel took on a wendigo
Kelly Armstrong is the author of the Women of Otherworld books (Elena Michaels)
Lady Juniper MacKenzie - Chieftain of the MacKenzie Clan in the S M Sirling Books of a post apacolyptic earth.
Her son Rudi aint too bad either
I second Lazarus Long so much. Micheal Valentine Smith wouldn't fight. If we can do two Heinlein characters, how about Mycroft?
Belgarion is in fact, better equipped than Polgara, but not as funny to write. If you're going to do another Eddings one to be funny: Ce'Nedra.
Also:
Goku or Vegeta. Vegeta would probably be funnier to write.
Merlin (although this isn't quite as funny once you've knocked out all the other world-class sorcerers in the first book)
Yoda (because he can hobble up to the battle with his cane, kick ass, and hobble away afterwards)
Kazul (because if you're going to go for mythical beasts, we really do need the King of the Dragons)
Mnementh or Ramoth (since I'm apparently creating a dragon's division here)
For an extra Wrede character, Mendanbar (home turf battle only. Because the stuff he pulls off in the forest is hi-larious)
and Martin of Redwall. Because I really want to see a mouse with a sword up against, well... anyone.
Thank you - I was Going to suggest Dragon Teams as a class - Temeraire and certainly Mnementh & F'lar (Although I liked F'nor & Canth better as fighters)
lol - I was thinking of Reepacheep - maybe there should be a fighting mouse category - Ruth might be a good choice also - small but determined - as far as Michael Valentine Smith - well, he made bad guys disappear from several towns - I think he would take care of some folks - Ce'Nedra would be funny - and I thought of someone else - Adam Sinclair - The Adept series - he could do some serious whomping on someone.
Overall, pretty good for the first time out. Some matchups were clearly for laughs.
Suggestions:
1. More dragons!
2. Demons?
3. the Mountain that Rides
4. Allanon
5. Thomas Covenant
6. Lestat
7. Lan
8. Shadowspawn from Thieves World
9. Jon Snow and Ghost
10. Sparhawk
I thought about Micheal Valentine Smith- he's certainly capable, and Heinlien deserves representation here, but the problem is his demeanor. Lets not forget the end of 'Stranger'...hes more likely to ask that his opponent grok and eat him than fight him.
I think one could argue that the very act of grokking would result in a victory for Smith - if you understand something or someone so completely that you become them and they become you, would that not then count as a victory of Smith?
Great idea these cage matches. But quite disappointing is the missing of any ericsson character. I would like to see Karsa beating the shit out of the shrike.
Other contestants :
Morgon of Hed (McKillip)
Logen Ninefinger (Abercrombie)
Druss (Gemmel)
Seyonne (Berg)
Corfe (Kearney)
Thraxas (Scott)
Librarian (Pratchett)
Rap (Duncan)
Odysseus or Achilles or Mahnmut(Taken from Simmonds)
Takeshi Kovacs (Morgan)
Chewbacca, Darth Vader
Fox Moulder, Scully
Dante Valentine (Saintcrow)
This match is not done yet, but I am looking forward to the next one with more characters and different weight classes.
Definately FitzChiverly Farseer. Skill, Wit, Assassin training.
Might have gone with Ser Barristan the Bold, or the Hound, or Ser Gregor, instead of Jaime, but if you're up to speed on TSOIAF then both Cleganes are "dead" and Jaime is handless. I could see Tyrion too, he does prefer trials by battle.
Would've liked to see Fafhrd or the Grey Mouser (or both, tag team style).
Tempus from the Thieves World books would've been good too (maybe a little unfair - but with Cthulu in there what's fair?)
Someone from the Dragonlance books would've worked, I'd vote for Tasslehoff.
Someone from Jack Vance's works would've been nice as well.
I could live without the Hogwarts girl and the pretty vampire guy and definately Eragon...but those three make the matches funnier. Why isn't Rincewind in there?
I made a list of some old school/Golden age cats on the brackets page and a lot of them are already mentioned here: Paul Atreides, Valentine Michael Smith,Fafhrd AND (I say they get to fight together) the Grey Mouser.
To this I would add: A Lensman (take your pick), Solomon Kane, and Tom Bombadil* (who then becomes my odds on favorite).
*Funny Fact: While Tom Bombadil doesn't appear in any of Peter Jackson's movies, he does appear in the Veggie Tales adaptation "Lord of the Beans."
HOLY CRAP!!!!
Everyone (including myself) forgot one kickass mo'fo!!!!
Juan Rico in full M.I. Armor!!!!
Apparently we're not that good at this Cage Match thing. :)
Has whoever was written these blurbs actually read any of the books? I haven't read anything so full of OOC actions since I was a higschooler on Fanfiction.net
Some suggestions I haven't seen yet:
Sauscony (Soz) Valdoria from Catherine Asaro's Skolian Empire series, because you definitely need more females that can kick ass (and not little girls).
Miles Vorkosigan from Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga books. Yay for physical dwarfs/mental giants!
Arlen from Peter V. Brett's Warded Man
Would love to see Isak Stormcaller from Tom Lloyd's amazing Twilight Reign series
Love this idea. Would definetly love to see it expanded to more characters as well. The simulations are great, really enjoyed this. I would have liked to see
Corwin - from Roger Zelzany's Princes of Amber Series
Fafhrd or the Gray Mouser - from Fritz Lieber
Grunthor or Achmed the Snake - Elizabeth Hayden SymphonyofAges
Yoda - not a star wars guy but Yoda vs. Gandalf would be cool
Oh! I can't believe I forgot!
DARTH VAARSUVIUS FTW!1ONE1!
All I have to say is "Familicide!"
Although, the ultimate baddie from that series is really Xykon the Lich, because he did technically beat V, but V is a funnier character to put up.
I think Yama Dharma from Lord of Light would do better than Corwin.
I'd suggest Vin Venture from the Mistborn trilogy. Definitely need more female asskickers.
Like posters above, I also see Paul Atreides' absence as a glaring oversight (especially when there's double characters from the movie-franchised series.)
Also, it didn't occur to me when I first read this post, but I really like the suggestion of Phèdre above. That which yields is not always weak. Heck, she'd seduce half the lineup; she's probably the only mortal who could take Rand for that reason. And for the godlike opponents, well, she has the name of God in her head. :)

And it appears that no one else has mentioned:
Doctor Who (Any incarnation or all of them)
Godzilla
Ultraman
Superman
More than anyone else, I'd love to see Christopher Chant, full-grown Chrestomanci-sized Christopher especially. With his wit and his power as a nine-lived enchanter, I think he'd fare pretty well. And, hey, throw in his wife Millie, the former Living Asheth, and you've got quite the duo.
Also Diana Wynne Jones, Howl. He's a wizard, he's witty, and he's Welsh, plus he's got Calcifer on his side.
I second Kazul. Of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, I'd say King Mendanbar would be interesting, too.
If you're looking for little girls, Angel of the Maximum Ride series has wings, gills, and the power of psychic persuasion. And she speaks fish.
Llyr of The Last Unicorn. He's quite the renowned hero, after all. And Schmendrick the Magician.
Sabriel or Lirael.
Silas of The Graveyard Book.
From the Narnia series, Caspian or Rilian. And, I agree Reepicheep would at least be amusing.
Dustfinger of the Inkworld Trilogy. He plays with fire.
And, really, I'd have taken Murtagh over Eragon from the Inheritance Cycle.
Im really sad mistborn didnt get in here, its really an underappreciated series.. Vin wouldnt really stand a chance at winning the whole event i suppose, it would be fun seeing her fight
But then again Vin has strength, agility, can see what her enemies will do before they do it, and she's a girl.. so basicly she did fight, under the alias Edward Cullen lol..
Rumo!! Rumo all the way! He may look like a cute little dog with horns, but he's the best fighter from a breed of fighters.
I think he would also make a nice change from the more classical fantasy characters, as Walter Moers' fantasy is almost a genre on it's own.
For those that aren't familiar with Rumo, check out Rumo and his miraculous adventures by Walter Moers. It looks like children's literature, but it very much isn't.
acheron written by sherrilyn kenyon
my reason is 1 because he is a god 2 because he can possible die 3
i think he should be in the next cage match because this one is already started
his motto is "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
As I see things, Cthulhu really throws everything out of proportion... no real guarantee the gargantuan elder being won't step on everyone's head before this is all over, this assuming it doesn't fall victim to EBA (Elder Being Apathy) and fall asleep.
So, the question might be more apt as: "Who would we like to see going head-to-head to get the crowd exited to see the Main Event?" So... how about...
A few for the crowd to cheer:
Morgaine & Vanye (C.J. Cherryh) - might be a good pair for that tag-team match vs. Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser (and partly to satisfy villajidiot's plea for "more female asskickers")
Major William Mandella (Joe Haldeman) - uh... maybe he could team up with Heinlein's Juan "Johnny" Rico to form a truly awesome kick-alien-butt tag-team
Jack Brennan, the Human Protector (Larry Niven)
A few "baddies", perhaps a little underpowered but oh-so-deliciously-underrated, to get the crowd going:
Sam Harker (Henry Kuttner)
Gulliver "Gully" Foyle (Alfred Bester)
Croup and Vandemar (Neil Gaiman) - another tag-team, and probably one that would prove a real crowd-pleaser.
Slippery Jim diGriz, the Stainless Steel Rat (Harry Harrison)
And one contestant that would never consider surrender and would stand a good chance at keeping Cthulhu awake for 0.0000030592 nanoseconds or so:
a Mark XXXIII BOLO (Keith Laumer) - the war machine's three 200cm and sixteen 30cm Hellbores might cause Cthulhu to stomp twice on its opponent's head even if a BOLO technically has no head.
You should definately use Geralt of Rivia (from "The Witcher"; I'm suprised I haven't seen him being mentioned, he even has a game now >
...And he's an extremely interesting character, so think about it, at least. He'd make an extremely interesting match.
For the seedings of combatants I would recommend 4 sets of 1-16. This way it's easier to compare across divisions.
Would definitely have liked to have seen some head magic from Granny Weatherwax or an appearance by Death from Pratchet's Discworld.
I agree that Paul from Dune missing is too bad, but I think Alia Atreides would have been just as good a choice, mad pre-born Bene Gesserit
I was real dissapointed that Richard from SOT wasn't included. Only to see a serious beat down on him by pretty much whoever. I agree though that a grudge match between him and Rand would be beauty. Or, have Conan take him out and then hook up with Kahlan.
How good would it be to read a confrontation between Lestat and Edward. That would be a good beating to read too.
One that I thought for sure should be included sometime is Kellus from PON.
I dig it though. Beauty!
Check out Drizzt's fight with Kahlan Amnell in the first round--Richard makes an appearance (although I'm not sure you'll like it!): http://bit.ly/aY2L0b
Atrus from the Myst series would have been an interesting add.
As many have said, Death would have functioned better as Pratchett's lone entry considering he's the only static character in the series.
In terms of the Song of Ice and Fire series, I disagree with the people who would argue for Tyrion or Jon. Though they are strong, the best representation of the strength of the series would have likely been Daenerys Targaryen and her three youthful dragons and priceless army of unsullied. I suppose a case could be made for Thoros of Myr or Jaqen H'ghar could be argued for. Nevertheless, I think it's pretty obvious that Daenerys will be more powerful in the near future (which unfortunately is at least 1 book from now). I will admit however that these characters are all at a disadvantage sine the likelihood of them being killed later in the series is like 75% knowing GRRM.
A more hilarious entry would have been including Stephen King himself from the Dark Tower series.
As mentioned before, I think the bracket would have worked better if you separated characters by class (God/Wizard/Warrior/Thief). This way the wizard vs warrior argument could have waited until later. Also, some guidelines or rules would likely make it less of a popularity contest. You're not even taking your "cagematch" rules seriously!
I second that someone from Myst would be cool, but Atrus is too...paternal, gentle, and worried. You need a more megalomaniac killer sort, so if we're going straight from the games, I think Gehn or Sirrus would be better, although they are somewhat impotent in the grand scheme, so I'd actually go back to the book of Ti'anna (besides, that keeps us strictly in books) and vote for Veovis or A'Gaeris.
I doubt that characters can ever be seriously compared in strength, so I personally like the way that popularity and most convincing story have added themselves to the mix. Some great arguments were made in the comments to the Arthur Dent vs. The Shrike match and by the end I didn't know which one I wanted to win! Dent is the type of character who's great in these competitions, because while against many opponents (eg. any of GRRM's Lannisters) he'd just be meat, he has an X factor against some of the over-the-top god-mode class. He took that Shrike right to the wire!
For that reason I would actually prefer a random (or the semblance of randomness, randomly contrived is fine) lineup to contestants being divided into "brackets".
One restriction I'd like to see in future contests is for no more than one character per author and no more than one per series too (for shared worlds). It's still not like there'd be any shortage to choose from. Perhaps then there could be a pre-contest vote among the candidates as to which would be the chosen characters? There are some authors (eg. Simon Green) who could provide a huge list of cage-fighting fodder. Having a pre-contest vote would also placate those who would have preferred, for example, Richard to fight and not his wife, or Hawk as opposed to Fisher. Or perhaps a ringside tag-team might be an option? (Eligible votes for Simon Green for this year are: Hawk, Fisher, Hawk AND Fisher, etc.) Then all you need is to choose 32 authors (or shared worlds) whose characters you think would be entertaining to have duke it out. We could even vote for which those authors would be too... (I think this cage match idea is going to be around for a while).
Finally, most of my additions have already been suggested (most notably Ninefingers and Morgaine), so let me just add that I'd love to see Octavia Butler's Doro in a (mis?)match.
The Bloody Nine - Joe Abercrombie, The First Law Trilogy
Kylar Stern - Brent Weeks, The Night Angel Trilogy
Durzo Blint - Brent Weeks, The Night Angel Trilogy
Owen Deathstalker - Simon R. Green, The Deathstalker Series
Richard Rahl - Terry Goodkind, The Sword of Truth Series
Vin - Brandon Sanderson, The Mistborn Trilogy
Kelsier - Brandon Sanderson, The Mistborn Trilogy
I left a couple out:
Angus Thermopyle - Stephen R. Donaldson, The Gap Saga
Darth Vader - I didn't even think of Star Wars at first, but lets face it there are far more Star Wars books than movies.
Just to set the record straight why we didn't have any Star Wars characters (or their ilk): we were trying to limit ourselves to characters that originated in literature. Obviously we know there are tons of Star Wars books (we publish them!), but we're thinking there might be room in the future for Star Wars characters to make appearances in other brackets we might do...
I remembered another big one that I left out:
Geralt of Rivia - Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher Series
Just throwing this out there, i think next time you do the cage matches, you should consider doing it with different brackets. Heres what i mean, we seem to have 3 generalizations for characters, Mages (Like Ged, Hermoine, Dumbledor), Gods (Aslan Cht'ul'lu, Polgara), and regular, albiet badass Warriors (Aragorn, Eragon, Jaime). Here is the problem, as phenominal as these warriors may be, the kind of had no chance to beat a goddish person like raynd, who can literally wipe them from exsistance. I mean, sure, thats the way it would happen if it was all in one, but even in the books, people like gods fight gods and mages fight mages, because it makes it more interesting. Who would have read Harry Potter if Voldemort only had a sword? I just feel like it would be a better way to organize things, get more characters into the cage, and make the matches more competitive. Ontop of this, no one will complain about someone losing to a clearly better man (what almost happened with the shrike and dent), and people one try to totally out vote someone just because they dont want thier golden lannister boy to have to fight him at some points. all this said, i really enjoy the game, and kudos to youall for bieng so original. You should buy copy rights and make this a video game :)
Super Smash Brothers: Gods, Archmages and Warriors?
I Agree with everyone that replied change the brackets, it needs to be done. That said, ...
Karsa Orlong: Malazan BOTF
Tomas :Riftwar etc.
Maxine Kiss: Hunters Kiss Series
Harlequin: Shadowrun Novels
Paul Atredies: Dune
Colbey Kalistinson/Kyndig : Renshai Chronicles
Merlin son of Corwin of Amber(Or Benedict)
Karl Cullinanne : the Guardians of the Flame
Sandtiger: Sword Dancer series
Kickaha: World of Tiers
Molly Millions/Sally Shears :Neuromancer, Johnny Mnemonic,Mona Lisa Overdrive
(there are of course multiple characters from multiple universes) I left out all of the television/movie/video game novelizations.
First off, I love this idea.
As I was reading the comments, I realised that some names were popping into my head...some from the distant past. :)
Thanatos from Anthony's On a Pale Horse...or any of the Incarnations of Immortality, but I suppose they're out of vogue. :)
Kassad or Moneta from Simmons' Hyperion (...Kassad actually defeats the Shrike in the future.)
Colbey Calistinsson from Reichert's Renshai chronicles (so skilled with a blade that he can challenge gods...and as it turns out a bastard child of Thor).
Garth from Lawrence Watt-Evans Lords of Dus series (Hey, he rides a kick-ass cat-thing). :)
And come on people, let's not forget Shelly's Frankenstein's creature, Keats' Lamia, or Stoker's Dracula. :D
I also saw someone else mention a Kay character,... Phelan or Cadell from Ysabel.
And every moment, I think of more, so I'll stop here. :D
I'd like to see:
Achilles/Hercules (C'mon, Greek myth is fantasy too! Thor would be fun too...though maybe too over-powered)
Daneel Olivaw (not a fighter I suppose, but what a mind!)
Teela Brown (v 2.0 - who'd want to fight a lucky protector?)
Tom Orley (Startide Rising may be just one book, but the man is awesome. Gillian ain't a bad option either)
Pham Nuwen (what's another dimension or two to him? He's used to being clueless and still working out how to win!)
Julian Delphiki (Bean rather than Ender 'He was going to survive. When you knew that, you knew all there was to know about him.')
Taran of Caer Dallben (on second thoughts, I don't want him to die...he wouldn't really be able to play in this league)
Paul or Leto II Atreides (both good at administering the arra-kiss of death)
Lanfear/Mierin (powerful, evil and it's her Last Chance)
Johann Karlssen (would love to see how the berserker's greatest enemy would have fared against the Shrike!)
Fafhrd or the Mouser (as a team would be best, but would it be fair?)
Bartimaeus (the footnotes to the fight would rock, if nothing else)
One of the Dorsai (pick your own, I can never remember who's who)
And since we seem to have ignored the movies pretty thoroughly, a couple of candidates (lots more where these came from!)
Neo (from the Matrix)
Toruk-makto (from Avatar, complete with big red bird!)
Maybe we could have 64 entrants next time? :D Wishful thinking I guess, but thanks anyway, Cagemeisters, for setting this up....
Definitely Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus would've added some flavor to the contest, be it to add the category of under-represented Daemons.
Preferably, to add some punch, in the late Volume 3 Bartimaeus/Nathanael bodysharing combo.
One to be considered as all-time/all-reality favorite: Merlin !
Yeah, but if we start taking from any remotely fantasy source, then we'd have to let Kratos in, and he'd kill all those Greek gods right quick...
skafloc -the broken sword
Great job guys. I would just like to add Dracula and Merlin to the list.
I came into this a bit late, I'm afraid. I heard about it on Patrick Rothfuss's blog. First, very great job in getting this all organized! It's been entertaining. :)
As for characters I think probably should not have been in it? Only one stands out a lot: edward cullen. Most of the ones I know in this are awesome and I love them (yay for Raistlin and Cthulu!!). :) Though, I have to agree with the person who said it would have been interesting to see edward (vampire) vs Edward (Death, vampire hunter, one man in Anita's life she *hasn't* slept with, etc.). Perhaps one of the future matches can start out with characters who share a same name (first or last)...could be interesting. :P
Characters who I think should have been in it? I definitely agree that Brent Weeks should have gotten some exposure here. Whether it was Kylar, Durzo, Vi...a number of characters in there to choose from. Perhaps a character from one of Mercedes Lackey's books (I personally would have loved to see Vanyel...I like Tylendal a bit more, but...I don't know...he's not cage match material, really...). Perhaps Mira, Danaus, or Rowe from Jocelynn Drake's Dark Days books.
I must say that I am impressed by all of the characters that you do have here. Some of them I never would have expected to see in this kind of listing. That being said, I think you have missed out on some of the tougher characters. Owen Deathstalker (Simon R Green) should have definitly made the list, as well as Harry Keogh (Brian Lumley - Necroscope series) because lets face it, when you can travel instantly through space through a door that you can open WITH YOUR MIND and the dead themselves will rise from their graves to help you, then you have a big advantage.
IF you have to put vampires of any kind in a tournament, get any of the vampire masters from the Necroscope series. Any one of them will wipe the floor with Lestat or Cullen.
On a purely physical\no powers level, Any of the main characters from the ORCS books by Stan Nicholson would stand up well in a fight, and would probably buy you a beer afterward, if you were still breathing.
And honestly, where is Batman during all of this. Not to come off as a comic book fanatic, but Batman always has a way to beat anyone. Like him or hate him, he is tough.
The last character I would like to nominate for the nex list is Remo Williams from the Destroyer series. I don't know if you've read any of them, but the man is the next thing to super human. Do yourself a favor and check them out.
Although I can understand the argument of having separate brackets for magic users, swordsmen, sci fi, fantasy, ect. But half the fun is pairing up these matches and seeing who would win. For example I imagine Conan taking a few lightning bolts before chopping some one scrawny wizard in half, or would the mage be the better and somehow consume his soul. Next! Also, there would be those people that fit into both categories like Rand Althor. I digress..
The character I would put into the cage is:
Achmed the Snake from Elizabeth Haydon's Symphony of the Ages
I found the series is quite good with real strong characters. It's no Martin or Tolkien though.
Apparently I'm the only one who's read them.
Also in the future it would be entertaining to do a superhero cage match "Superman vs Batman" "Wolverine vs Spiderman"
Awesome
i think nikki instead of kahlan would have given drizzt more of a challenge though i get the whole mother confessor thing.
Nikki would have been nice to see as well.
This is fantastic!
Also, props to Patrick Rothfuss for putting a link to your site on his blog.
So, more characters I'd love to see, the next time you guys do this:
I second/third Achmed the Snake from Elizabeth Haydon's Symphony of the Ages.
John Carter of Mars from Edgar Rice Burroughs...
Simon or the half-hand guy from Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow & Thorn--also a great idea.
Paksenarrion from Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion? She's a tough lady with a sword who can deal with some supernatural stuff!
Michael Stackpole characters: Tarrant Hawkins/Kedin's Crow from "The Dark Glory War", or Neil Roclawzi from "Once a Hero"--these guys are worthy of clashing with a Lannister at least.
Nobody's mentioned Simon Wargallow from Adrian Cole's "A Place Among the Fallen". What a guy!
And here's a competitor for King's Roland Deschaine: Jon Shannow, the Jerusalem Man from Gemmell's "Wolf in Shadow". At least they could shoot at each other, and if Shannow had a Sipstrassi stone he could maybe compete with Deschaine. More weird gunfighters anybody?
Sci-fi:
Emile Khadaji from Steve Perry's "The Man Who Never Missed"? He's suitably improbable. Perhaps a match-up between Khadaji and Richard K. Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs.
If you're going to have paranormal chicks, what about Parrish Plessis, hard-ass Aussie cyberpunk girl from Marianne de Pierres' "Nylon Angel"?
Or a new category: Armored Battle-suited Space Trooper Fight. May the least original character win!
Johnny Rico from "Starship Troopers"
Felix from John Steakley's "Armor"
The already-mentioned Major William Mandela from Joe Haldeman's "The Forever War
Michael O'Shea from John Ringo's "A Hymn Before Battle"
--But my money's on Nils Hansen from David Drake's "Northworld"
Sorry I gotta stop. This is waaay too fun
I don't god/desses should have been allowed - unfair advantages I think. But that's ok. All other races are cool.
I thought you missed:
Lirael (and her crew of Mogget and the The Disreputable Dog) from Garth Nix's Abhorsen series
And for any Vampirish matchups I would have put Digen Farris, 1st Channel from the Sime Universe of J Lichtenberg (Unto Zeor, Forever)...it would have been interesting to see a match of Digen and Edward Cullen. Or Edward Cullen vs St Germain of the vamp series by Chelsea Q Yarbro.
Maybe we should have a Vamp/Vamp-like Cage Match????
Anne Rice could comment or something...
Good call on the Atreides but I think Alia would also be a good addition. Lanfear is also a good idea, Aviendha would be as well. She can kick ass old school with her Maiden of the Spear skills and channel.
Brak or maybe R'sheil from the Hythrun chronicles would be nice.
I haven't read enough of the Malazan books to really say who, but there seem to be a lot of good candidates there.
Vin from the Mistborn trilogy.
Jon Stark.
Nynaeve maybe.
FitzChivalry.
Rhapsody, Achmed, or Grunthor (Symph. of Ages.)
Walker Boh. (Terry Brooks)
Jarlaxle (Salvatore)
I hate to say Thomas Covenant and Richard Rahl, but I'm saying them.
And bring back Gandalf, just because :)
I forgot to nominate Ringil from R.Morgan. Think that one would generate interesting comments from everyone who knows him including the author.
Likely to prevail against gods:
Fun to read in cross-mythos duels:
Chiun from the Destroyer Series
I'd like to note that any kind of "ultimate battle challenge" is always more interesting in the first few seasons (UFC and Battlebots come to mind, notably) before the inter-disciplinary formula has been figured out, and vastly different and inappropriately matched styles get jumbled together.
One thing I'll definitely say: Although we're all "professional nerds" here at Suvudu, we're also human--and therefore haven't read everything we're "supposed to."
This shames me.
That's why I'm so glad we're doing this--not only is it a ton of fun, but I'm putting together a list of things I should be looking into. I'm always looking for new books and authors, and who better to ask than the people who know the characters the best--namely, you guys!
So keep 'em coming. While I'm sure we'll never all agree, part of the fun of being fans is having these kinds of arguments. I, for one, am happy to help facilitate them.
While I have read most of the books included in the cage match, there are several authors, books, etc. that are new to me. Can you post the other suggestions in a comprehensive list? I am always looking for new authors and series to read.
I will agree that most characters from my favorite works were represented. I do agree with others who have argued that Jamie Lannister should have been allowed to compete double handed, or else it would have been better to pick a character with better ability to compete (Melisendre or Jhaqo, both minor characters but they could do some serious damage in this tournament). I also wish Richard Rahl would have gotten his own spot, just because the showdown between him and Rand al'Thor would've been priceless. (I know he kind of came implied with Kahlan, but Kahlan, while awesome when doing her blood rage thing, is just so easy to take down).
The major complaint I have: why no love for Robin Hobb? Fitzchivalry Farseer would kick ass in this tournament! I'd say the same thing about Dirk Provin from Jennifer Fallon's Second Sons trilogy...but while brilliant and probably able to out think any of them (even Jamie Lannister's little brother Tyrion) he might not be able to win any fights. However, if Jamie gets to go, I think Kirshov Latanya ought to go too. I might have chosen a character from the King Arthur pantheon too...probably from The Mists of Avalon.
Maybe you could hold a cage match for the geniuses, the ones who don't actually kill people but get others to do their dirty work. Dirk Provin vs Tyrion Lannister definitely would cause me to geek out.
FitzChivalry Farseer
Vin (Mistborn)
Eugenides (Thief of Eddis)
Maybe throw in a vampire for variety, though I can't think of a really good one
In later seasons maybe there could be team fights with more than one characters of a universe on each team. Like Vin and Kelsier against Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. At least it would make the battles interesting.
Someone said this already, but...Paul Muad'Dib. Hell yeah. Shit, the God Emperor, Leto II, too. Or the Bashar Miles Teg. Hell, any of these Dune mf would be pretty tough. Oh, and Duncan Idaho...post ghola awakened-memories...as a mentat, plus his Ginaz Swordmaster skillz, yo.
Hiro Protagonist, awesome.
Rand al'Thor seems like kind of a dick.
Any of the Hogwarts crew...please.
Darth Vader: just needs therapy.
Someone said Batman. Totally agree. Dude is smart. And Superman is a fucking chump and a government stooge.
For some of you, Anne Rice makes you all wet...I'd say Lestat. He's pretty tough. Whines a bit too much, though.
Arthur Dent? Are you people insane?
And two more I can't bloody remember...great protagonist/anti-hero mf's. If I remember, I'll post it. Hint: One of 'em is something about being 'sleeved', i.e., your memories and personality can be put into any body...yeah, that one.
Finally, my number one choice: Bugs Bunny.
That rabbit will fuck your shit up.
Rand al'Thor can be kind of a dick but he REALLY has his reasons. Lestat is a good call.
Okay, there are several problems with this bracket:
1) Elder God versus everyone else...Elder God wins in .3 seconds by destroying all known metaverses then goes to lunch at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe;
2) While some characters are definitely able to compensate for magical use or the lack thereof, the divisions should be a bit more logical, i.e. Fighters, Wizards, Gods, and Techs (then you can have a 4 way cage match FTW);
3) Cthulu has to be the ref; and
4) Finally, only people with brains are allowed to vote...otherwise stupid things will happen like Jaime Lannister making it to the third round past Cthulu.
Although I am enjoying his books, none of Erickson's characters should be in the cage match. His books are based out of his D&D Campaign and it is definitely Monty Haul. I think half of the characters are Elder Gods/Gods/Demigods and the other half are god killers.
A couple of names that I didn't see:
Abraham Lincoln - Awesome one-two punch of freeing slaves and slaying vampires!
Jesus of Nazareth - Can kill fig trees with a word and toss moneychangers out on their asses!
Blasphemic to not have any of Erikson's characters in the cage match. Didnt have to bring in the badass demigod\godkillers like Karsa Orlong (WITNESS), just any one of them would have been awesome. Kruppe would have been a blast and his match-up, if done right, would have been so much fun I would have payed to seen it written.
I have a few suggestions...
-Arthur Penhaligon from The Keys to the Kingdom (or maybe someone else from the series - Lord Sunday, Superior Saturday, The Architect, the Piper)
-Will Treaty from the Rangers Apprentice series (or Halt, Gilan, Horace, Erak)
-Bobby Pendragon from Pendragon (or any of the other travelers, Saint Dane)
-Others from the Inheretence Cycle (Arya, Galbatorix, Roran)
-I like the suggestion of Sauron
-Nathaniel or Bartimaeus from the Bartimaeus trilogy (maybe the two of them bonded like at the end.......hmmmmmm)
-Jack or The Bard from The Sea of Trolls series
-Hamish X (the gray agents, teddy bear robot)
-Other Chronicles of Narnia characters (The White Witch, the Pevensies(spelling?), King Caspian)
I forgot to say that Edward and Hermoine should never have been in it and Eragon deserved a better rank than 30! (lower 20's/upper teens would be more like it)
Suvudu: Awesome job with the cage matches - very impressed.
I actually like the comedic write-ups as much as the serious ones, so I wouldn't stress as much about categories for the next draft.
Ok, my character requests for the next round:
Pug/Tomas, Raymond Feist
Corwin or Random from the Chronicles of Amber
Anansi from Anansi Boys
The Great Skeeve from Aspirin's Myth
The Other, from Otherland
Waylander, david gemmell
Martin of Redwall
Jim DiGriz, stainless steel rat, Harry Harrison
Bothari, Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga
Achmed the Snake - Elizabeth Hayden
Martin Martel - Hammer of Darkness, L.E. Modesitt Jr.
The Lieutenant - Final Blackout, Hubbard
@mask rock one: you're thinking of Takeshi Kovacs from Altered Carbon
WHERE IS THOMAS COVENANT? The Unbeliever really should be on here....I am new to these cagematches so maybe I missed it...
Okay, as much as I love Drizzt I think a really nice fight would have been Ged Vs. Elminster (from ForgottenRealms), There a reason Elminster wasn't in CageMatch?
I thought Jaime Lannister, especially with one hand, an odd choice - from the Song of Ice and Fire canon the semi-immortal Beric Donadarrion, legendary swordsman Ser Arthur Dayne or just Gregor the Mountain would all have been better. Still, now Jaime's in the final, one hand and all, what do I know? :)
Other possible omissions: Uther Doul from Mieveille's The Scar is the one that jumps out at me. FitzChivalry Farseer has been mentioned already. If you're going to have a vampire why that simpering prat Cullen rather than Dracula? (Or indeed Ennis's Cassidy, but once you start dipping into comics it does raise the question of why not Superman so let's not.) Also "perfect companion" Joscelin Verreuil from the Kushiel sequence - no magical ability of course but exemplary in single combat.
I've had a brief read, seen a few mention Egwene and Nynaeve etc, but my second character from WoT would be Mat Cauhton. I Know hes pretty mainstream and all, but theres a reason for that... its because hes awesome. I think it would have been funny to say have Roland try and shoot him, then fall on his face and shoot himself by accident. Or have Aragorn slip right in front of him, easy prey. He wouldnt even have to move to win most fights, and yeah, I reckon hed beat Rand.
Paul Atreides would be a great add on, and I have to agree with what a lot of people are saying, why not pick one of characters from the Malazan books. Karsa, Quick Ben, Heboric, Cotillion, Apsalar, Icarum, the list goes on. Also, I love the Wheel of Time, but the Rand fights are getting cheap. Yea balefire is awesome, but have the time when Rand grabs the One Power he's fighting to keep from passing out or throwing up or being controlled by a dead guy that lives in his head. You would think that would give his opponent a little time to maneuver. Belgarath or Belgarion would have been a good add on too. Anyway, still thought the matches were awesome.
Jacqueline Carey's Phèdre nó Delaunay and/or Melisande Shahrizai
Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden
Kage Baker's Nicolas/Edward/Alec
Harry Dresden was in the first round--he lost to Conan the Barbarian.
But the other ideas are good ones.
Whoops! Missed the Harry Dresden match-up (obviously). Sorry about that.
Totally second/third/fourth the call for Melisande Shahrizai. She is so freaking stealthy and badass.
Ok rather than listing a bunch of names I just wanna suggest a few things.
-This may seem obvious but ignore any non-scifi or non-fantasy characters. While i absolutely love characters like Batman and Vegeta, neither belongs in this contest. If you add people like that then this will turn into a manga or comic battle. Not the worst thing but thats not what this was designed for.
-Instead of separating characters by type either eliminate all god characters and/or have each member of the same universe compete in a mini-bracket so there is only one character from each universe in the main tourney.
-Also do this bi-annually so it remains exciting each time it happens but not too often.
(include a Taken or a member of the Company from Glen Cook's The Black Company Series)
I have to agree on Fitz, Ninefingers and Vin. Also Cain from Heroes Die by Matthew Woodring Stover, an absolutely killer book.
Hey,
For anyone who hasn't read Russel Kirkpatrick's "Fire of Heaven" trilogy, you should do so. There are a few characters that would do very well in a cage match.
Achtal would be a great fighter
Kannwar the Destroyer as a magic user
You could even throw in Husk or Noetos from Kirkpatrick's Broken Man trilogy.
Check it out!
Also,
Anyone interested in a lighter read should look at Lev Grossman's "The Magicians." The characters are exactly what everyone wanted Rowling's Potter characters to be... Real teenagers who drink, party, fight, and act like living, breathing people.
They might do well in a magic user's bracket.
S.L Farrell's magic using characters from "The Nessantico Cycle" would work well. I'm out of original ideas now! Unless.... Animorphs! Kidding..
"The Magician" characters are actually college aged. Should have stated that in the original comment.
Durzo/Kylar(Night Angel)
Tavi/Invidia(Codex Alera)
John Taylor/Walker(Nightside)
Eternal Duncan/Miles Teg Clone(Dune)
Taran(Chronicles of Prydain)
Any Character from(The Saga of Recluce)
Asher/Morg(Kingmaker, Kingbreaker)
Just my thoughts :)
Oh almost missed this one.
Rohan/Sioned/Pol or other char from (Dragon Prince/Dragon Star series)
I also loved the Bink suggestion.
I skimmed most of the postings; some or all of my picks were probably already listed. I support the "One character per author" rule posited by several others.
Joscelin Verreiul or Imriel de la Courcel (Jacqueline Carey)
King Arthur (Traditional)
Logen Ninefingers or Monza Murcatto (Joe Abercrombie)
Repairman Jack (F. Paul Wilson)
Sonja Blue (Nancy A. Collins)
Shadow (Neil Gaiman)
The God of the Razor (Joe R. Lansdale)
Soldier (Caitlin R. Kiernan)
Seriously!! What the F**k?!?!?! All of these posts and not ONE mention of any character from Katherine Kerr's Deverry series???
Jill, Nevyn, Rhodry, Cullen, Dallandra, Evandar, or Arzosah??
Any one of these would have been a great addition! You shouldn't consider yourself a true fan unless you've read her series. And yeah, I'm pissed about Erikson being missed as well.
Ok, just tossing out ideas here as I'm not sure what the logistics would be as far as writing from the authors and whatnot... what about a whole series of battles with contestants fighting various opponents throughout the season... then have your bracket at the end with rankings based on best record much like they do in the (GASP) sports world... I know, I'm a geek who also likes sports :D
At least with this format you wouldn't have to narrow down the contestants to 32, you could let their records determine who's in.
I say this because there are so many characters out there who shouldn't be left out based on only 32 slots in the bracket... Hobb, Brooks, Eddings, Erickson, and so many more could have characters represented... then we see how they fare against a variety of opponents...
I would love to see how Allanon would match up to Belgarath, Gandalf, and others!
I know it's horror and all, but how about Pennywise from It by Stephen King.
If anything, it'd be freaking funny as hell.
I know some of them have been mentioned before, but I'll make a list of the Brandon Sanderson characters just to make sure we include them all:
Mistborn Trilogy:
Vin, Kelsier, Marsh, Elend, Sazed, TenSoon, and the Lord Ruler would all be good choices.
Warbreaker:
The God King or Vasher and Nightblood.
Elantris:
Hrathen... maybe.
Alcatraz:
Alcatraz or Grandpa Smedry.
I'd also like to see some Niel Gaiman characters in the mix. Perhaps:
Stardust:
The Witch Queen, Septimus
Anansi Boys:
Spider or Fat Charlie
Neverwhere:
Door (her opening powers would be sweet), Hunter, or the Marquis de Carabas.
Another favorite of mine is Faelamor from Ian Irvine's View From the Mirror Quartet (the character alone might not be worth the read though). Arthur Penhaligon or Suzy Turqoise Blue from Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom would be cool as well. While we're on Garth Nix, Sabriel from Sabriel and Abhorsen would also be good in a cage match.
I tried to put the books in order of priority. In my opnion all of them would be good in cage matches.
I hesitate to suggest him... but Artemis Fowl anyone?
to all those who suggested Sir Arthur Dayne... I wish I could agree, as he is my favourite.... unfortunately, even in the first of George R. R. Martin's books he is dead, and nothing more than a memory. In the hedge knight he is not born yet, so I am not sure if he is eligible.
He's still my favorite though.
Oh, and if you are going to do forgotten realms, no more Drizzt. Pharaun Myzzrim all the way!
Add to that Gromph de Baenre, Jarlaxle, or Zaknafein.
Lots of interesting options here (and a few it's astounding got overlooked - someone from Amber and Dune, Severian, etc). While I disagree Valentine Michael Smith wouldn't fight - I think a lot of these characters are iffy enough that they might just get vanished - I do think Lazarus Long has (obviously) far more survivalist in him. Now, on to some suggestions I didn't see above:
I think Moorcock's Jherek Carnelian would've been an offbeat, interesting choice. Virtually unlimited power at his disposal, and a rather odd mindset. I think he'd match up well against Cthulhu, for instance. I'm not sure he could necessarily be driven mad.
Mark from Saberhagen's Books of Swords? (Things could really get awkward for the favorites if he has Doomgiver in hand, for instance.) Or the Emperor instead, perhaps?
Bliss from Foundation, perhaps? Dr.Manhattan? (I know it's "comic books," but it has more than its fair share of literary acclaim.) I had another suggestion, but it fell out of my head while I was writing this. Alas.
How about The Saint of Killers from Preacher. I mean come on he killed the devil and God. That has to count for something.
Arakasi, from Feist&Wurts' Empire trilogy. How can you NOT include him?
I think the bloody nine would have been iteresting, specially a match up againts conan, good barbarian vs. bad.
How about Hope Hubris from the Piers Anthony series Space Tyrant
He's got fighting skills, and great helpers in tactics, as well as fighting skills
The star wars characters also deserve entry if star trek names are considered. Star Wars is one of the most creative stories with awesome characters who would be great in these matches such as general grievous, Yoda, Darth Maul, Han Solo, and Anakin/Darth Vader, and if you want more mixed gender go Princess Leia
Bloody Nine
Quick Ben, Karsa or A. Rake from Erikson.
Eliminster. What a round it would have been with Eliminster vs Dulmberdore.
FitzChivalry.
Phedre No Delaunay, from J. Carey's Kushiel series.
Raj Ahtan, Farland's Runelord series. (he could kick some ass)
Special Agent Pendergast, From Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs.
And last but not least, John Dread, From Tad williams Otherland Series.
First off, I loved this idea, thank you so much for entertaining all of us. My only thought is this: I was disappointed to see some of the people selected. This was a cage match after all and I think the best from each series should have been written in. I know maybe they wouldn't have been as fun to write, but why say Polgara and not Belgarion? Or why use Kahlan and not Richard Rahl? Some of the series I have not read, so I do not know if this was the same there as well. I think you could have done another bracket with different characters; who wouldn't want to see Tasslehoff vs someone? But I think for this purpose the "hero" so to speak should have been used.
Edward Cullen(gimme a break and worst vampire ever), and Hermine Granger Really?
Try some of these next time please!!!
Anamander Rake of the Malazan Series
Azalin,King of the Dead and Lord of the Necropolis
Druss the Legend
Huma Dragonbane
Traveler from Malazan Series
Malus Darkblade
The Lady from Chronicles of the Black Company
Strahd von Zarovich
Which brings to mind, Lord Soth of the Dragons series from Weis and Hickman
High King Kallor of Malazan Series
Kalam Mekhar from Malazan Series
Actually, most of the characters in the Malazan Series
Oh forgot Elminster!!!
Here's a few that should have made the cut in my opinion:
Paul Atredies (Dune)
Lirael (Abhorsen)
Arthur Penhilagon (Keys to the Kingdom)
And, I guess if comics are involved in any way, I'd throw Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan into the mix.
I absolutely agree with the one-per-author idea. However cool she is, having Hermione in addition to Dumbledore was not necessary and took a spot that could have represented another awesome author. Also, neither Edward Cullen nor Eragon should have been included...I guess technically they are fantasy characters, but to me they are low-reading-level unoriginal money-machine characters, and should be ashamed to stand in the company of Dresden, Al'Thor, Lannister, Conan and Protagonist. That's just me, though.
Many of the characters I'd add have already been named in comments, including Waylander, John Taylor, Allanon, Grunthor, Martin the Warrior, Owen Deathstalker, Paul Atreides, Tavi, Shadow, Joscelin Verreuil, Taran of Caer Dallben, Kylar Stern, Miles Vorkosigan, Rorschach and Death. Good calls, all.
A few that haven't showed up yet, though, are:
Commander Sam Vimes (Terry Pratchett)
Caine (Matthew Woodring Stover)
Cal or Nik Leandros (Rob Thurman)
Stile (Piers Anthony)
and just for fun, Milo from The Phantom Tollbooth.
Caine in particular would fit well into this type of contest. He's both physical and magical, he'll fight anything, he's clever as all hell and he never gives up. (He's also one of my favorite characters ever, if you couldn't guess that by now.)
Ok for Eddings books i would go with Sparhawk with Behliom over Belgarion and Co. honorable mention would belong to Altahlus
I think Lestat has way more going for him then any of the twilight pu$$ies
Percy Jackson would be more fitting then hermione granger, atleast he is a demi god
and where was Vin? no mistborn in the cage
I'd like to see some of those fantasy characters whose strengths are hard to define. A bit like it was the case with Arthur Dent. Even though I wasn't familar with the Shrike I thought the matchup was hilarious.
Examples:
Mat Cauthon (Wheel of Time) have already been mentioned.
Nakor (Raymond E. Feist's books)
Kruppe (Malazan Book of the Fallen)
Ghenghiz Cohen (Discworld)
I'm sure there are others but those are the ones who springs to mind. What makes them interesting to me is that you can put them up against any high powered Rand Al'Thor'ish character and still have a fun discussion about who comes out on top.
Besides that I think there have already been a ton of good suggestions (I might even have missed some with those I mentioned). This years cagematch have had me laughing more than once, what more can you ask for.
I enjoyed the cage match. I would've loved to see Jaime take the gold....
I believe a more balanced bracket would have been better, ie. grouping gods/demi-gods in one div; wizards in another; and so on...
Also was surprised to see anita blake and edward cullen included but King Sholto and the Sluagh; Doyle; frost, King Tarannis; from the Merry Gentry series, overlooked...also, the Vampire Lestat; from the Night Angel series...Kylar Stern, Durzo Blint, Vi Suvari, should've been included!
And while I'm at it...How about the biggest, meanest, baddest MoFo of them all...Lord Vader...Heck, if the NCAA Basketball can have 92 teams in next years competion, why not Suvudu cage match!?
I loved the Suvudu 2010 Cage Match. The Tag Team Match up would be a lot of fun.
Why not team up a Warrior/Fighter/Soldiers with a Wizard(medieval or technical)? I'd like to see 2 possible write ups of how each team could prevail. These could be provided by the authors or the fans. To prevent any problems with fan voting; have the matches statistically weighted to be factored with the votes.
My suggestions for Warriors:
1. Conan
2. Aragorn
3. Elric
4. Drizzt
5. Roland Deschain
6. Rand all'thior
7. Jon Snow
8. Captain Kirk
9. Mal Reynolds of the Firefly Series
10. Harry Dresden
11. Luke Skywalker
12. Anita Blake
13. Darth Vader
14. Obi wan Kenobi
15. Kara Thrace "Starbuck" of nuBsG
Wizard or just some real smart guys/gals:
1. Tyrion Lannister(no Jaime!!)
2. Locke Lamora
3. Spock
4. Dr. Xavier of the X-Men
5. Gandalf
6. Snape of the Harry Potter series
7. Lord Voldemort
8. Kvothe
9. Raistlin de Majere
10. Data of Star Trek
11. Dr. Gaius Baltar of nuBSG
12. the Holodoc of Star Trek Voyager
13. Dr. Who
14. Arthur Dent
If there is a God like Character he/she should be teamed up with someone who will put a statistical drag on their team. It could be a weak but, interesting character, or the team mate could be of a different ethos. This could make for interesting stories and eliminate the 4 sentence entry.
Please respond with more Warriors/Wizards suggestions. There were no intentional omissions. I for one would like to see randomly generated teams.
I hope Suvudu does this.
ok, I have but oe gripe with that list. "He's" the Doctor, not Dr Who. Though, when it comes to the "Whoniverse" (can't believe I used that in a sentance...) there are certain issues. First of all is the Doctor just being rediculously cunning.
Lets be honest, how exactly would his opposition handle a 996 year old Tme Lord who has vanguished world ending bad guys at least 2 times a year. Lets put that in perspective: he's squashed Forsaken and Dark One quality bad guys around 1944 times. Hell, he locked his own people in a Time Lock, travelled dimensions and has THE ultimate plot device. Oh, and companions. Not a fair match, possibly fun to write, but not a fair match.
Jack Harkness? He's seduce everyone on the list, but hey, its a fair fight.
The Master? HOW many times has this guy been removed from the time stream "one last time"? Come on folks, we KNOW the master will return. Hell, the master is the ultimate villain for the most rediculous and bonkers quasi-hero of English tradition, the Doctor.
Dalek: Ok, lets be honest, they are all pretty much the same, but it would still be fun.
To those of you in the Steven Erikson crowd, think on it. Would Shadowthrone really let any of HIS pawn get wrapped up inn other people schemes? Unless he too is scheming! You can't include anything from the Erikson universe without risking the Shadowthrone factor. Lets be honest, thats a Deus Ex Machina a good cage match needs to do without.
Okay, but, I must ask "Excalibat", I forgive your spelling errors, because I'm sitting next to you and can totally understand your pain.
I must agree with The Doctor... but what would his motivation be for entering the cage match?
Well, if, say the new Paradigm Daleks were to attempt to make use of the inherent permanence of balefire, as well as its retroactive effects, I could see him interfering only where a truly awful villain is involved. That is ultimately what dooms the doctor out of a cage match. Active time travel. Lets be honest, only balefire or Dragnipur offer any threat, and Dragnipur is only a temporary solution that exists outside of his and his TARDIS’s time stream. The question of balefire also arises in examination of regeneration, a facet of post Rassilon Time Lord biology. Does the current form die, or all forms? If the Master or the Warlord are any indication, then no, he can be brought back.
But there could be the fun of it: The Doctor vs. the Master or the Doctor vs. The Daleks, throughout the Cage Match, showing up in other people’s fights. Hell, there could be a fun one: Retroactive appearance. Fight begins in round 1, ends in round 2, but the middle parts occur in finals and championship. Gotta love time travel!
That is a fun idea... Which brings up the conclusion of why the Doctor isn't in the fight. He wasn't invited, nothing eventful happened. He wasn't invited because he wasn't going to play by the rules and was gonna mess a lot of shit up. Hell, if that happened we could have been crowning Arthur Dent the champion after he disposed of Edward Cullen (the only non upset in the tournament) by accident... then again... Arthur Dent doesn't really follow the rules of progression either. I propose an alternate ending in which, while dying in round one, a slightly younger Arthur Dent accidentally kills Rand while he's receiving the award for winning.
Ah, there we go! The Doctor vs. Daleks Vs Cybermen Vs the Master vs. Magnus… All starting with the poor Shrike and Arthur Dent. Arthur, being Arthur attracts Magnus, pissed at having been forgotten since the 80’s, begin a battle royal throughout everyone else’s cage match. The Sonic Screw Driver and the TARDISe are waaaaay to kitschy and blatant a plot devise to be reasonably allowed in a cage match. Oh, and the Doctor isnt just a beloved character, but a National Institution. For consideration: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=16637124&method=full&siteid=66633&headline=bt-bring-in-voice-of-baker--name_page.html
Lets be honest, it just isn't fair to any other Character. Huh, on that note, It'd have to be the Fourth Doctor. Tom Baker is the recurring "Best Doctor".
Call it Cage Match: Whoniverse Edition?
You know, again, much as was with the tournament, what should happen is not how the various fanboys would dictate, thus rendering The Doctor and all his various enemies irrelevant after a certain point, which is why the cage match is over, and an Arthur Dent that's about... 5 fighting rounds worth of time younger than he would actually be now, thus 1 round younger than when he faced the Shrike, doesn't have a nice Cage Match trophy to match his fish and improbability drive. He might put it up next to a smashed vase of petunias and a rabbit-skin bag with a fly smear on it, the 3 of which would cause all sorts of time paradoxes, and start the tournament over from the beginning again and again and again, and hell, maybe some of them include our little Doctor scenario. But, unfortunately, the fans have dictated that time is relevant and we won't have to live through an ever-going tournament. Just ever-going speculations as to how the tournament should and or should have turned out.
I move that any and all characters from the Whoniverse capably of time travel be banned from any and all cage matches on the grounds that A.) the Doctor has far too much cleverness, B.) British (“We invented hooliganism!) fan boys, as well as a national following, C.) The sonic screwdriver can do anything (nothing to contrived as a plot device!) except shoot, and thus trumps any magic and or technology, D.) the Doctor is a master swordsman, and has E.) a TARDIS. The same goes for the Master.
Lets be serious, this entire thing should have boiled down to Mr Rand Al'thor and Pug, Two classic nobody snot nosed farmboys who rise up and become stupidly overpowered.
Honestly cant lose to anyone else because the other character's Authors actually showed a little bit of something called "restraint" while conceiving them...
Other Awesome additions (besides Pug) would be
- Daemon Sadi (Fuck that guy is a beast and awesomely cool)
and
Martin The Warrior from Redwall, I mean come on, he's a mouse AND he can hold a sword!!!!!! HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE OPPOSABLE THUMBS!!!!
It would seem everybody has forgotten about the greatest swordsman & sorcerer of all time! The one, the only...
Elric of Melniboné
Slayer of mortals, demons & gods!
Someone may have made this suggestion already, but I really want to see Alvin Maker, from the series by Orson Scott Card.
Endless possibilities. He would have a chance of defeating any character, no matter how powerful, but also a chance of being defeated by any character, no matter how weak (at least when it comes to the caliber of character in a tournament like this).
Suzie Shooter or Razor Eddie from Simon Greene's "Nightside" Series
Agree that Daemon Sadi would be good, but Jaenelle would be better. Or Surreal.
Brienne of Tarth
Other characters from the "Harry Dresden" series, including Thomas Raith, Ebenezer McCoy, Karrin Murphy, Michael Carpenter (before his injury) or Sanya.
I thought the first Cage Match was great. I have no complaints with anyone in it. I even give a big thumbs up for going with some characters over others in certain series. Like Polgara over Balerion or Khalan over Richard. Way to call a turd a turd on those ones. A few I think would be fun in the future are maybe,
Vin (mistborn Trilogy) I highly doubt she'd win, and might not even make it very far, but it would be a fun fight with her either way.
Sir Neil McVren (Briar King Trilogy) Not a top contender, but he does have that battle rage thing, so he could be partially dismembered before going down. Plus if nothing else, maybe it would draw attention to an underated series by Greg Keyes.
Logan Ninefingers aka The Bloody Nine (The first law trilogy) A popular one from the posts so far, and definately Needs to be in the next one. He could take the whole thing IMO. If he makes it into Cage Match round 2..... I'll kiss Suvudu full on the lips.
I would have to say the top character additions for me would be:
Vin- from Mistborn
Lan,Mat,Moridin or just someone besides Rand from the WOT;
Harry Keogh- Necroscope Series-------> surprised I haven't seen his name too much, any cage match gets better with a necromantic teleporting vampire! I think he'd stand a fair chance of taking it.
Rudi Mackinzie- Emberverse Series
Mordred from dark tower
Zedd or maybe Richard (though his write up in Kahlans fight didn't give me the impression Suvudu is a big fan of his :)) from SoT
Barry Bonds--- hear me out here, he was in literature: Juicing the game, Game of Shadows, and the Jose canseco book! His steroid powers would definitley make for a good match against another brute lol :P
Haha--Barry Bonds.
TOO powerful, perhaps.

I am so very, very mad at all of the many internets right now. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Turn off your computer and go read a book. Try an actual book this time, instead of whatever reeking pile of crap Robert Jordan and his even-less-talented-if-that-were-possible descendants shat out for consumption by your diseased, Manga-ridden minds.
In case you can't tell, I recently stumbled across this cage-match business. I was not happy with what I found. Cthulhu going down I can understand-he lost to a norwegian sailor last time, as I recall- But Aslan was defeated by someone who by rights shouldn't even be in this stupid tournament. The Name of the Wind was good and all, but Narnia is something special. Fricking atheists, messing with the classics.
And Aragorn losing to Ged? Really? Let me get this straight- You people, whatever demographic you represent, and it can't be a good or large one, prefer The Earthsea Cycle to The Lord of the Rings. Go screw yourselves with a concrete mixer.
This entire contest showed a lack of class and perspective that was astounding. That characters with the impact and magnitude of Gandalf, Aragorn, Conan, Cthulhu, and Aslan could fall to someone from Wheel of Time... It makes me sick, it really does. I would honestly fear for the fate of Fantasy and Science fiction, were it not for my confidence that whatever black contingent voted here did not represent anything but the dregs of the Fantasy/Sci-Fi community, and probably the earth as well. You are scum.
My apologies for the out-of-place post, but I didn't see a "Complaints about the rampant idiocy of the voters on this site" thread.
Hmm. I'd love to see:
-Artemis Entreri or Jarlaxle from R.A Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books, either one would do,
-Soulcatcher, The Lady, or The Limper from Glen Cook's Black Company
-Tyrion or Loras (The Knight Of Flowers) from Georgre R.R Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire
-Rincewind and Death from Pratchett's Discworld
-Walter O'Dim from Stephen King's Dark Tower
-Others, too, but I can't think of names off the top of my head easily.
I know this isn't EXACTLY on topic, and I'm kind of resurecting a dead thread, but all of the author writeups on the 2010 Cagematch are completely gone, and a good number of the actual match vs. pages. I would really like to read these writeups, seeing as how some authors (Patrick Rothfuss in particular) posted them only here. Do you think that you could put them back up, or simply post them here? E-mailing me them would even work. I'm really curious, and half a month after the contest is over, I just heard of it.
I noticed the writer's updates were missing also... but there's a trick. If you open the page in ie, and then select the text "Click here to see what author Patrick Rothfuss thinks will happen" with your mouse, copy and paste it to a notepad window, you'll see the full write-up. Some bug on the webpage.
You could also just "view source" via firefox, but the formatting is hard to read that way. The stories haven't been lost at least.
Eliot and fiona post would have been good
