Well, it's that time of year again--when you tell us how wrong we are! We've announced the field of 32 characters for this year's Cage Match, and a lot of it was based on your suggestions from a similar forum last year.

So, the question is: who would you have put in Cage Match 2011...and just as important, who would you have replaced with your new selection?

Thanks--and make sure to tune in March 7th for the matches!

So clearly there are Villains not in this match that might have deserved to be here.

And yes, the might have included a Wheel of Time character (though I'm sticking to my guns on this one!).

But we're always interested in hearing more about what you think would have made for a better Cage Match, so please let us know which characters you thought would have been better in the Villains version of CM (and, while you're at it, let us know which characters shouldn't have been included).

Just a few notes, in case you're wondering:

--We only included one character from any given world (with the exception of Starscream being part of a combo, and Megatron already being in the bracket)
--We only took from TV, books, and movies (no video games or comics, as we think we can do full brackets in those mediums)
--We're people, too, and as such, our choices were certainly made with our subjective opinions in mind. That said, we did try to be as objective in possible to create the most fun Cage Match, and while we welcome debate, we ask that you just be polite about it

Other than that, tell us how stupid we are!

You're not going to like every book you read. It's called "having an opinion," and it's perfectly okay. But a scathing review is as unhelpful as a dishonest one. A good reviewer helps his fellow readers choose books that they will enjoy--and there are a couple ways to can make sure that that is what you're doing.

1. Give Context. Context is the single most important aspect of your review. Taste is relative, so you need to let readers know who the audience for the book is, and what your tastes are. Without context, your well-thought-out review is meaningless. After all, how useful is a four-year-old's opinion on Dante's Inferno?

2. State Opinions Not Facts. You can't compare the book to a Platonic Ideal of Bookness, because there isn't one. So instead of declaring something bad, say the truth: you disliked it. And remember: as much as you think that having a cow crusader called the Masked Moo is stupid and cliché, Johnny over there has never seen anything like it, has papered his walls with the book posters, and goes to school wearing spots and a domino mask.

3. Give your reactions. Even better than saying you dislike something is explaining why. And I don't mean by tearing it down. I mean by describing what made you feel negatively about the character or plot or whatever caused your issue. For example, "When the Masked Moo squashed that innocent little sea slug under his cold, merciless hooves, I just couldn't identify with him anymore. I mean, who does that? It made me feel bad for the Omnipus and his sea slug legions!"

4. Identify what you like as well as what you didn't like. Instead of saying that the Masked Moo was an unlikeable hero, try saying: "I like my heroes brave AND compassionate. When the Masked Moo risks his life to save Mini Moo, I really felt for him, but I just didn't understand why he wanted to squash the poor sea slug." That way, you give other readers a perspective on your opinion.

5. Don't Bash the Author. It's just rude. Remember: they really are trying their hardest to make you happy. Besides, you never know the circumstances under which the book was written (and it's also rude to speculate: "Man, Mr. Mooster must have been hit in the head repeatedly to think this is good!), it might not have been written for you, and judging a whole person by one book that they don't have complete control over is like judging someone based on their outfit on prom night.

Do you have any other good advice for new reviewers?

I'm doing something terrible. Something I've warned many a writer off doing: I'm making my PC into a main character in my upcoming novel. None of you would ever have had to know that, except yesterday Phil's D&D interview series got to me and Farideh, my fey pact warlock.

"This is a bad idea," I told Phil. "People will know." He was unconvinced--except, perhaps, of the fact that I was being completely paranoid.

Okay, maybe I am, but I can't just let it go.

We get plenty of submissions to our open calls--samples of books people would really like us to publish--that are obviously someone's role-playing game transcribed to look like a novel. I say "look like" because there's usually something just a little off. If the writer is the DM, the setting might get a lot more love than it should. If the writer is the player, the main character can be too perfect. And whichever side the author is on, there are a lot of things happening that don't fit the plot in the best way possible: Maybe the characters don't really grow or change. Maybe the confrontations are more about bad guys being bad and good guys being good than anything the characters might want. Maybe there are just a lot of details about what kind of armor everybody has.

So when I was asked to do another Forgotten Realms book and started riffing on my PC's background, I got very concerned. It's the kind of thing that can go horribly wrong or fantastically right, depending on how much you're willing to accept change. What the hell was I doing?

We all have bad habits. I have a tendency to "overhear" things--I admit it. It's hard to defend it, as hard as it is to stop myself from doing it. But some bad habits seem peculiarly suited to writers...or at least frequently indulged in by them. And I suspect they're better off for it. here are seven that might actually be good for your writing. . .

As much as I am enjoying the Cage Match, I am very disappointed to see that women are barely represented in the contest. This seems like a missed opportunity to me.

Lets look at the numbers:

=Fictional Characters=
Male: 26 (81%)
Female: 4 (13%)
Genderless: 2 (6%)

=Authors*=
Men: 25 (78%)
Women: 7 (22%)

Ouch. So Suvudu lets women be represented a little more than four time less often then men. I can think of a few women who certainly could have been included.

Skade (from _Redemption Ark_)
Molly Millions (from _ Neuromancer_)
Arya Stark (from _A Game of Thrones_)
Cirocco Jones (from _Titan_)
Leisha Camden (from _Beggars in Spain_)
Claudia (from _Interview With the Vampire_)
Ramoth (from _Dragonflight_)

And there are a ton more female characters out there!

I don't think that anyone doubts that men dominate the science fiction and fantasy genres, both as characters and as authors. But Suvudu and Random House had a great chance to show the breadth of kick-ass female characters and amazing female authors out there. I'm sorry that they missed this chance, but I hope that if a second Cage Match comes around we can look forward to seeing strong women as half of the characters competing!

--Chris

* Raistlin and Haplo were created by a man/woman team, so I credited then as .5 each towards the male and female authors.

Well, that's what we want to know, too. So if you think there's a character we've "snubbed," tell us who, and why they deserved to be in Cage Match 2010.

And, if you're really feeling ambitious, let us know who they should have replaced!
