On October 20th, I posted news titled Auction: Terry Brooks Character Name.

In short, Terry allowed fans to bid on an auction where the winning bidder could have their name in a future book. The auction helped raise $1700 for children, schools, and other non-profit entities around the world. Terry gives as much as possible for numerous charities throughout the year, and that one created a fun new opportunity for him.

The character from the winning bidder became the G’Home Gnome Shoopdiesel in the recently published A Princess of Landover.

That one turned out so well that Terry decided to do it again—this time for a Shannara character name!

The auction went live in October and ended at noon on November 11th. To help get news of the auction to Terry’s fans, I posted the information on Suvudu and the News section of his official website, mentioned it on his official forum, and sent out an email blast to his Brooksbooks newsletter which goes out to tens of thousand of people.

By the end of the auction there were 72 bids, fans hoping to get the chance to be immortal as a character in a Terry Brooks novel.

What dollar amount did the auction finally go for?

Pat is a cool cat.

A very cool cat indeed.

He recently launched a contest on his website that benefits his charity of choice, Heifer International. Last year he raised loads and loads of money, his fans contributing thousands and thousands of dollars and Patrick—bless his bearded heart—matched every single donation. It is a cause he constantly has on his mind and I applaud him for his efforts.

Since I’ve been given a tiny podium to stand upon, I thought I would mention his new contest and drive people to his website.

In case you haven’t noticed, the excitement level around here for The Lord of the Rings at Radio City Music Hall (more details) is pretty high. Everything about this is wonderful: the movie scores by Howard Shore, the films by Peter Jackson (Fellowship of the Ring will be played during the concert, by the way), and, of course, the books by J.R.R. David has a new book coming out. The Other Lands, the sequel to his fantastic epic fantasy novel Acacia, will be published on September 15th. To celebrate this release I am about finished with an overhaul on his website, which will be done over the course of the next week and will include the first chapter excerpt from The Other Lands.

The Winds of Dune has been published in fine bookstores everywhere and authors Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have begun their east coast tour! They rarely make their way eastward but have embarked on a tour from New York to Connecticut to Pennsylvania to Maryland to Ohio—and even to Canada!

We told you about this contest before and now we’re telling you one last time: you only have a couple more weeks to enter to win an 8 gig iPod Touch and signed audiobooks from the good folks at Listening Library. There’s still time!

What is it? It’s Listening Library’s Fantasy Road Trip Contest and it’s perfect for long trips (to other states and countries) or small trips (to the grocery store or a walk around the block). So, really, you could all make use of these prizes.

#1. Have fun and be creative! The more you use your imagination, the better—songs, animation, sock puppets, whatever inspires you!

#2. Take on the challenge.
For your video to be eligible, you must find a way to include these things:

• a reference to Florida
• a reference to audiobooks
• a clip of dialogue from the audio you’ve chosen (we’ve made these clips for you, you can download them below to use in your video)

Try to stump us—find an inventive way to use these elements in your entries (it doesn’t have to be a literal translation). The contest video has them too, did you find them?

The Fantasy Road Trip Contest is now open for entries! To post your entry, you’ll need to post it as a video response to the contest video on YouTube here. Please note when posting your video to CLEARLY state the author’s name in the title of your video so we’ll know which category you’re entering, and TAG your videos with the author name and “Fantasy Road Trip Contest.” And don’t forget to share your videos with your friends! Ask them to favorite your video if they like it—lots of favorites just might help you when it comes time for judging…

#4. The fine print…
Ok, everyone, here’s the 411: to enter you must be between the ages of 13-18 and a legal resident of the United States. The contest will open for entries June 1-August 17, 2009. Winners will be selected and notified by August 31, 2009 by YouTube message. One winner will be chosen for each author category (the participating authors will choose the winning video for their category) and will receive: 1 8GB iPod touch and a collection of audiobooks signed by the author. Videos less than 30 seconds or greater than 5 minutes in length or containing profanity or inappropriate content will be disqualified.

Please remember, we here at Suvudu aren’t running this contest, so you’ll have to head over to the Listening Library site and play by their rules. Don’t worry though, they’re good people.

Let’s start by congratulating our winner, Yudelky C-V! Yudelky was our 355 entrant and, when we ran the random number generator to select our winner, lucky number 355 was the result (see below).

Yudelky’s audiobooks are in the mail (or, depending on when you read this, in her music player of choice). So what would Yudelky bring along for snacks? Like many of you, she considered each possible companion. A vampire? Yudelky is packing a mountain lion as a snack (be careful, Yudelky, and kids, don’t try this at home!). For a werewolf, though, she’s packing some chips, soda, and a couple dozen slim jims. So far, we’re digging the werewolf chow. And music? Here are Yudelky’s lists:

Now, let’s talk, shall we? These types of posts are supposed to write themselves. That’s the conventional line of thinking. People send in all kinds of great stuff and it’s supposed to be a simple job of rounding it up, throwing it on the blog, and calling it a day.

Clearly, that line of thinking didn’t deal with the kind of response we go here on Suvudu.

We’ve run some great contests before with some incredible answers, but the depth of the answers we received for this one, combined with the volume, actually makes picking just a few great tidbits a difficult chore. Twilight fans, you rocked Suvudu and I’m sure I’m not just speaking for myself when I say I was really impressed with your response and creativity!

We received entries that ranging from full playlists, to song titles with lyrics, to accompanying YouTube music video playlists, and a bevy of interesting snack choices. Here we are with out third author in the Fantasy Road Trip to Comic-Con Contest series, and he happens to be a favorite of mine. Like the Harry Potter series, this is one of the series’ I read entirely via audiobook. I loved it. Philip Pullman narrates and a full cast fills in the character parts. Making the production even better, the characters were portrayed by their same actors the entire way through the series. It’s a fantastic production of a really fun story.

Credit Benjamin Franklin for attempting to warn us about the zombie threat. As with anything else Franklin-ian, you have to read between the lines a bit: if death is a certainty, then rising from the grave to nosh on noggins is soon to follow. If only we’d listened sooner, perhaps we would be rid of the walking undead by now. Of course, Franklin could have been a little clearer on the matter. That would have helped too.

And that’s where Max Brooks steps in. Max has dedicated himself to speaking plainly about the zombie menace and preparing us to deal with their attacks. So, with so many of us preparing to make the arduous journey to San Diego for Comic-Con International, we here at Suvudu felt it was our duty to keep you safe. At least one of you, anyway. But the rest of you will be well prepared!

C’mon, we’ve all done it. We read a book and the characters are just so appealing that we imagine ourselves interacting with them. Perhaps it’s fighting your way through an army of zombie androids, perhaps it’s sampling an alien meal, or perhaps it’s embarking on a road trip. This last one (or heck, all of them if you can manage it), is the basis of Listening Library’s new Fantasy Road Trip Contest. Listening Library is sponsoring an online video contest for teens this summer asking them to make videos about the fantasy series of Libba Bray, Tamora Pierce and/or Rick Riordan, imagining themselves on a road trip with a character from the books.
