Child of Fire by Harry Connolly

This post is going to be broken up into three parts: the Publishers Weekly Starred Review, the Jim Butcher cover blub and the excerpt!

Here is what Publishers Weekly had to say about Child of Fire by Harry Connolly:

STARRED REVIEW: Child of Fire by Harry Connolly. Del Rey, $7.99 (352p) ISBN 978-0-345-50889-8

Connolly’s gritty urban fantasy debut is not so urban: it takes place in Hammer Bay, Wash., where residents are thankful for the toy factory that stimulates their economy and are apparently oblivious to the frequent magical immolations of local children. Convicted felon Ray Lilly works for the mysterious Annalise Powliss and the Twenty Palace Society, hunting down people who use magic and the otherworldly predators whose power they channel. Callous Annalise and hard-nosed Ray have a complicated personal history that gradually comes to light as the Society faces off against factory employees, local law enforcement and other corrupt forces in the town. Unique magical concepts, a tough and pragmatic protagonist and a high casualty rate for innocent bystanders will enthrall readers who like explosive action and magic that comes at a serious cost.

High praise for the debut book of Harry Connolly!

But that’s just Publishers Weekly. What does a real reader think?

Well, let’s ask author and reader Jim Butcher, one of the hottest selling urban fantasy writers going right now:

Child of Fire is excellent reading: a truly dark and sinister world, delicious tension and suspense, violence so gritty you’ll get something in your eye just reading it, and a gorgeously flawed protagonist. Take this one to the checkout counter. Seriously.” — Jim Butcher, author of the Dresden Files

Well, that passes the reader test! What’s left?

What you think!

Harry has posted an excerpt on his website from the forthcoming Child of Fire! Click HERE to read the excerpt and then leave your thoughts for Harry.

Child of Fire will be published in mass market paperback on September 29th.

Then you’ll know what Publishers Weekly and Jim Butcher know!

butcher-changes.jpg

I think Jim Butcher is one of the luckiest S-O-Bs in the genre!

Why do I think that?

Well, he is super talented, for one. I hate people like that, people who make me just want to return to bed to read rather than do my own writing. People who make my writing feel unnecessary because they do such a great job and how could I ever possibly put out a book that sits on a similar shelf?

But I really think Jim is lucky because of the cover art he gets for his Dresden Files series. I love the artwork Chris McGrath creates for Jim’s covers; it holds a gritty realism that fits for the world of Harry Dresden.

Posted above is the cover artwork for the forthcoming Dresden Files book, Changes. It will be published April 6, 2010 and assuredly will be a bestselling upon release.

We have some time to wait.

But meanwhile, click HERE for a brand new interview with Jim and his wife Shannon!

Enjoy!

Jim Butcher. One of the foundations of the current urban fantasy movement. He is funny. He is witty. He is entertaining. And Harry Dresden always has his hands full.

In September, Del Rey Books will publish Child of Fire by Harry Connolly in paperback. It is an urban fantasy, in the vein of Jim Butcher. Del Rey pulled out all of the stops, sending the book to Jim for a blurb which he freely gave. The publisher also hired the services of artist Chris McGrath, who has supplied the bulk of the cover artwork on Jim Butcher’s US novels. Connolly even has the first name of Jim’s protagonist!

To say Harry Connolly has all things lined up for a great release is an understatement.

About Child of Fire:

Ray Lilly is living on borrowed time. He’s the driver for Annalise Powliss, a high-ranking member of the Twenty Palace Society, a group of sorcerers devoted to hunting down and executing rogue magicians. But because Ray betrayed her once, Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him—or let someone else do the job.

Unfortunately for both of them, Annalise’s next mission goes wrong, leaving her critically injured. With the little magic he controls, Ray must complete her assignment alone. Not only does he have to stop a sorcerer who’s sacrificing dozens of innocent lives in exchange for supernatural power, he must also find—and destroy—the source of that inhuman magic.

Child of Fire will be released in paperback on September 29, 2009.

And who knows? Perhaps I’ll get to interviewing Mr. Connolly here on Suvudu in June and see what Child of Fire is really all about.

Are you out there, Harry?

Not Dresden! Connolly!

More excerpt chapters will be released before Turn Coat is released on April 7!

Jim is one of the coolest people I have met and had in my home. He exudes ironical humor, carries a fun wit, and he inserts all of it into his writing. Turn Coat will be another bestseller, assuredly, and if you have a chance to meet Jim on tour or at a convention I highly recommend it!

Plus I think he is really lucky to have Chris McGrath as his cover artist!

Happy Reading!

Happy Birthday, Harry Dresden

Happy Birthday, Harry Dresden!

Today, Harry Dresden turns… something. Not sure what! Perhaps someone can enlighten me to that little stat. At any rate, today is his birthday and I hope Jim Butcher is somewhere celebrating the genius of his creation! If you haven’t read Storm Front, definitely go out and do so. It is a quick fun read that leads into more quick and fun reads!

To celebrate, here are some fun Harry Dresden links:

  • The Official Jim Butcher Website - All things Jim Butcher (and his wife Shannon) is on this website! He does a great job of keeping his fans up to date with what is going on, a testament to his fanboy roots and the webmaster who conducts it all. Great stuff.

  • The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle - This newly released hardcover graphic novel compiles the four-issue prequel to Storm Front, written by Jim Butcher! It is a quick read but has the fun flourishes that Jim is known for. I highly recommend it!

  • The Official Chris McGrath Illustration Website - Chris McGrath, in my humble opinion, is one of the better sci-fi/fantasy book cover illustrators out there! He has done the artwork for the Jim Butcher Dresden Files book covers, the Richard K. Morgan Kovacs book covers, and many many others! If you like those pieces of artwork, visit Chris’s website and order signed prints. Or order The Art of the Dresden Files 2009 calendar!
Happy Halloween, everyone! Be safe! Eat lots of candy! And be sure to brush your teeth before you go to bed!

The week started out so well. Sales figures were coming in very strongly on the first book in Del Rey’s collaboration with the Dabel Brothers comic book publishers: The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle, an original story by Jim Butcher set in his fan-favorite universe starring Harry Dresden. The individual comics sold very well through spring and early summer. When our Del Rey hardcover, which collects the four individual issues into gorgeous four-color hardcover and adds lots of interesting background material on how the story was created, went on sale 10/14 it immediately starting flying out of the stores.

Jungle.jpg

On Wednesday Bookscan released its sales figures, and Welcome to the Jungle appeared at #17 on the hardcover fiction list. (Bookscan is a database that tallies actual sales from bookstores and other outlets nationwide. It doesn’t cover 100% of the marketplace, but it’s the most accurate reference publishers have as to how our books are doing week by week.) My pulse rate went up. Bookscan doesn’t predict the New York Times bestseller list slot by slot, but it’s a very strong indicator for where, in general, a book will land. Welcome to the Jungle seemed a real possibility for the top 15, which is the part of the list that actually appears in print in the Times Sunday book section.

Wednesday evening came around, the Times list was released electronically to publishers, I fell upon it with glad cries … and was dashed to the rocks below. No Jim Butcher, anywhere. Not only was it missing from the top 15, it appeared nowhere in the Extended List. Nada. Zip. Much wailing and gnashing of teeth ensued.

So what did I learn this week? [more after the jump]
