The Winds of Dune has been published in fine bookstores everywhere and authors Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have begun their east coast tour! They rarely make their way eastward but have embarked on a tour from New York to Connecticut to Pennsylvania to Maryland to Ohio—and even to Canada!

While walking around the convention I cam across the Tor-Forge booth, where I have several friends who were deep in the throes of fandom. I looked over their booth, looking at the titles they had coming soon, but quickly settled on the cover to The Winds of Dune.

Why?

Because it has a new cover I haven’t seen yet. The Dune books over the last decade have had a distinctive cover design, but this year Tor decided to depart from the last ten years and do something a bit different.

I love it. It’s such a gorgeous piece of artwork. It evokes Dune quite nicely!

Over the years I know I’ve become a bit… odd.

Hold off the snickers, please. I know the obvious when I read it too.

I love to collect books. I think I’ve spoken of that passion before. I collect fine/fine, first/first, US/UK hardcovers from sci-fi/fantasy writers who write great books. But the books in my collection I love most are those with great cover artwork, great cover layout, great inner layout designs coupled with a great story within. Cover artwork is very important—to me, at least—as a book is more than just a story but a piece of artwork all by itself.

When artist Stephen Youll sent me the cover art to the forthcoming Tor novel Jessica of Dune, I knew he’d produced another winner for Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

I love the change from sand dunes and worms to market place and ornithopter! I liked it so much I decided to feature it here and interview Stephen about his Dune experiences and how he comes up with a cover every year for one of the bestselling sci-fi series of all time!

Suvudu: Hi Stephen! Welcome to the interview.

Stephen Youll: It’s nice to talk to you. I hope these answers give some insight for the love I have for the Dune novels and the Dune Universe.


S: Let’s get this out of the way. Are you a Dune fan? If so, how old were you when you read the original novel?

Kevin J. Anderson is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet—and one of the most unusual authors. While other writers spend their time pounding away at worn out keyboard keys and staring at a screen that becomes all too blurry all too quickly, Kevin writes outdoors as he hikes through the mountains of Colorado. How does he do this, you may ask? A hand-held tape recorder and a lot of batteries!

I’ve always been kind of curious how many tape recorders he has gone through over the years… Hmm…

At any rate, Kevin is best known for his co-authorship with Brian Herbert on the Dune novels and his epic sci-fi opus Saga of the Seven Suns. He is always working on several books and/or comic books in various stages of editorial work—from “writing” the manuscript to editing five or six times that manuscript to doing publicity for those published manuscripts.

Suvudu: When did you start writing? Why do you write?

Kevin J. Anderson: I started imagining stories and telling them to people when I was five years old; I wrote my first “novel” when I was eight, typing it on scrap paper on my dad’s old manual typewriter. I kept writing stories, started sending them out when I was 12. And I kept going.

I write because the stories keep forming in my head, the characters, the plotlines, the worlds. If I don’t write them down, my brain would get overloaded.

S: Describe your writing day? How many words/pages do you write a day on average? Breaks? How much time do you spend editing and how do you go about it?

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson visited the University Bookstore on September 16th to promote their new release, Paul of Dune—and here is some of that visit!

Brian and Kevin do not read from their books, usually, but instead like to talk to the fans about the Dune universe. They answered numerous questions and spent a great deal of time talking about working on Paul of Dune, where the series is going in the next few years, their work on a new collaboration titled Hellhole, and how the new film adaptation is progressing. The fans asked some very good questions as only fans can do.

There are six parts to the video:

• Part 1: Brian talks about how Dune Messiah was received and why he wrote a sequel to Dune.
• Part 2: Brian and Kevin talk about Princess Irulan and her role in Paul Atreides’s life.
• Part 3: Brian and Kevin talk about Jessica of Dune, Leto of Dune, and their writing schedule for the next few years.
• Part 4: Brian and Kevin talk about ending the Dune books with the Schools of Dune trilogy.
• Part 5: Brian talks about how Frank Herbert wanted to write a Butlerian Jihad book and elaborates on how the Dune 7 notes were found.
• Part 6: Brian and Kevin talk about the forthcoming Dune film adaptation from Paramount Pictures.
