“The Blackest Night falls from the skies.
The darkness grows as all light dies.
We crave your hearts and your demise.
By my black hand…
The dead shall rise!”

blackest_night_0.jpgAs it is zombie week it would be wrong if someone didn’t take the time to mention what has become the biggest event in the comic book world this year. DC Comics huge Green Lantern crossover mega event Blackest Night is dominating the comic book sales charts each month. Written by Geoff Johns and pencilled by Ivan Reis, the eight issue series is crossing over into all of the monthly Green Lantern titles as well as many of DC’s other core monthly books.
Just what is Blackest Night, and what does it have to do with zombies? Watch the video below for a little teaser and then jump to learn more about the series and find out how you can download a free copy of the Free Comic Book day Blackest Night issue 0 (cover to the left).

Zombie week continues at Suvudu and Random House. I love watching those Max Brooks zombies gnawing away at the Suvudu logo above, don’t you? So cool.

Joe Schreiber has posted some great photos from the amazing turnouts he got while on his author tour for his haunted house novel No Doors, No Windows and his New York Times bestseller Star Wars: Death Troopers. See the widget below for a clip from the audio book. Finally, ForceCast has a great Podcast featuring a review of the book and interview with Joe up on their site.

It’s very fitting that ZOMBIE WEEK (see them gnawing away above?) begins on the same day that we announce the winner of the Star Wars: Death Troopers Fan Video Trailer Contest. I don’t think anyone was surprised that 5ive By 5ive Studios took home the Grand Prize. Everything just worked brilliantly in this video (above), from the miniatures to the standing sets, and the participation of Eddie Dennis and his mocked up zombiefied armor just sealed the deal. Brilliant work. theNonchalantNod will receive a prize package that includes a signed copy of the book from Joe Schreiber as well as a library of Star Wars books. Our four runners up also created fun and exciting videos that we loved. They will also receive signed copies of Star Wars: Death Troopers. Thank you to everyone who participated, either by creating a video or voting for one. It was a fantastic experience and a lot of fun. Joe Schreiber summed it up best, “Every single one of these videos was a dose of zombified fan brilliance. But 5ive by 5ive’s contribution was simply next level — I can’t tell you how many people came up to me while I was on tour and told me that trailer was the first way they got interested in the book. In a word — magic.”

The Force was with all of you.

In other Zombie news, our friends at the Star Wars official fan site have posted a great (and spoiler heavy) interview Bonnie Burton conducted with Joe Schreiber. It’s a great read. Check it out here. And whatever you do, do not click on the blood splatters found throughout the interview. You’ve been warned!

Tauntaun cake.jpg

Finally, it’s not zombie related, but there are still plenty of tasty guts to look at (and taste!). Our good friend, and amazing Star Wars artist, Chris Trevas was married a few weeks ago. There were Stormtrooper ushers and the usual geek accents on hand, but what is quickly making its way through the InterWebs these days is the brilliant grooms cake that Courtney Clark from Cake Nouveau made. Hmmm….all I can think is 1) I hope I meet a cool lady who would let me have a tauntaun guts cake at our wedding and 2) I want the piece with the most guts please!

Congratulations to Chris and Julie! The Force will be with you, always.

Excitement filled our offices yesterday as Kazu Kibuishi delivered his final cover painting for Flight Seven. I love the Flight covers and every year its like Christmas morning when Kazu turns in his cover painting. In fact, Flight is a lot of Christmas mornings as I get the same giddy feeling when each artist submits their final stories. Flight Seven will be available in summer 2010 but you should check out the other six volumes if you haven’t had the chance to yet.

In other exciting news, Michel Gagné has teamed with FuelCell to create an animated game called Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. The game looks amazing and has an old school Defender and Asteroids sort of feel to it. But the real thrill is seeing Michel’s creations brought to life in stunning animation. Flight fans will thrill to this, as will casual video game players. Here’s the amazing trailer for the game!

Indiana Jones Army Dead.jpg

…It must be Indiana Jones. The man in the hat is back in two weeks as Del Rey brings us a brand new adventure with our favorite archaeologist. Indiana Jones and the Army of the Dead is written by Steve Perry and will be available in paperback on September 29.

“There’s no rest for the weary treasure hunter, but that’s how Indiana Jones likes it. Fresh from spying for the Allies in the thick of World War II Germany, the globe-trotting archaeologist doesn’t need much persuading to join his cohort “Mac” McHale in searching for one of the most coveted of artifacts: the fabled black pearl known as the Heart of Darkness. But the partners in adventure are not alone on their foray into the mysterious jungles of Haiti. German and Japanese agents are in hot pursuit, determined to possess the ebony artifact-and its secrets-for their own sinister purposes. And shadowing them all is an infamous voodoo priest, with powers of both diabolical science and black magic at his command.”

To get you in the mood for some high stakes swashbuckling adventure I’m going to share this clever YouTube video a friend forwarded to me. Look for the new book in a couple weeks and enjoy this fun video, an alternate take on Dr. Henry Jones Jr.

Publication of Star Wars: Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber is now less then four weeks away. As October 13th rapidly approaches we’ll continue to roll out some fun features to celebrate the first true horror novel to take place within the Star Wars universe. To date infected Stormtroopers ran amok at San Diego Comic Con, we’ve asked fans to create their own video trailer for the book, and various letters from the Purge have been disseminated to the public hinting at events from the novel. Before this post is finished, you will get a first look at the actual book itself.

No Doors No Windows.jpg
But first, a word from our sponsor. Joe Schreiber will be touring to celebrate the publication of his two new novels, Star Wars: Death Troopers and No Doors, No Windows. For information and tour dates please visit Del Rey/Random House.

Atlas_cover.jpg

There’s a lot of fun Star Wars news to pass along today, so I’m going to dive right into it. Star Wars: The Essential Atlas authors Jason Fry and Dan Wallace were guests on Fictional Frontiers most recent episode. “Launched June 8, 2008 on WNJC 1360AM Radio - Philadelphia, Fictional Frontiers is a live one-hour journey through the comic/novel, film, and television universes. Seeking caller opinions, host Sohaib Awan will engage listeners in one-on-one debates and discussions. In addition, Fictional Frontiers will tap into its reservoir of industry guests for insights into upcoming trends and projects.”

Fictional Frontiers with Sohaib - (Episode 64) - Part V

In addition, our friends at the official Star Wars website have created a new online companion for the book. Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Online Companion features a fantastic behind the scenes article written by Jason and Dan about the birth of the book, extensive endnotes for the book, an updated living Appendix of all of the planets and systems in the galaxy, and more. Oh wait…did I mention the new map Jason and Dan created with help from Modi? The Outer Rim Territories map with defined sectors! I’ll show you a sneak peek. For the full map you’ll need to visit the Online Companion.

For any Twitter fans out there, check out Stormtrooper TK329’s new Twitter account. Someone has taken the time to post as an Imperial Stormtrooper on board a star destroyer. “Hopefully I can make people understand what we do and inspire others to serve the Empire’s noble cause.” Looks like fun.

Complete_Vader_cvr_sm.jpg

October brings the release of two books I’m really excited about (that’s an understatement). The first is Star Wars: Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber, the first true horror novel to take place in the Star Wars universe, on sale October 13. The second is Star Wars: The Complete Vader by Ryder Windham and Pete Vilmur, on sale October 27. I’ll post a lot of fun material on this book in the next few weeks. The book is a gorgeous hardcover coffee table style book that reveals everything we ever wanted to know about the Dark Lord of the Sith, both as the character and as a global pop culture icon. Its loaded with tons of rare photos and some fun interactive features and pullouts. As a starter, check out this interview with Ryder and Pete at the official site. Lots of great information and photos.

Finally, I have to leave you with this bit of fun. Animals With Lightsabers. The photo says it all (and its just one of many on this site).

Keep reading Suvudu for more Star Wars coolness.

the_lost_symbol.jpg

As I’m sure all of you faithful Suvudu readers know, The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown is now on sale. The anticipation and mystery over this sure to be best seller has been building for some now so I don’t think I need to go into more detail about the book itself. What I stumbled across in my internet travels, and thought Suvudu readers might be interested in, was a fascinating little documentary that takes us step-by-step through the printing and binding process of the book. This same process applies to just about any hardcover (and softcover, with some minor alterations) that we publish…minus the dual guards protecting the book 24-7 in a locked enclosure! Grab a snack, embiggen the video, and enjoy.

Recently several messages were recovered from the Imperial Prison Barge Purge, after its discovery in the Unknown Regions. The somewhat cryptic messages give us a brief glimpse into what may have happened on board the ship before the mysterious “event” took place. Jump to read one of the messages and find links for all of them.

On October 9th and 10th you will have the opportunity to see The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring screened in front of a full orchestra. Maestro Ludwig Wicki will conduct the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra, The Collegiate Chorale, The Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Kaitlyn Lusk in a performance of Howard Shore’s Academy Award winning score as the movie screens on an immense 60-foot screen above them. The music of Middle Earth brought to life by more than 300 world renowned musicians in New York City’s famed Radio City Music Hall.

It gets better though! Billy Boyd, Peregrin “Pippin” Took will make a special appearance as well. In addition, Billy is touring with his band Beecake in support of their new album Soul Swimming. The Radio City Music Hall event coincides with the band’s East Coast tour October 6-11 (tour and ticket info).

And keep checking Suvudu for upcoming contests and specials related to the The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Radio City Music Hall Concert experience.

I saw this teaser trailer for Inception last night and now I can’t get it out of my head. It haunts me. Inception is the new movie written and directed by Christopher Nolan and it stars Leonardo Dicaprio. Just their two names alone would have my curiosity peaked. This trailer is so well crafted. Its visually amazing and features a score that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. It just builds and builds and it has certainly left me wanting more. With Shutter Island now pushed to February and Inception in the summer, Leo is going to have a huge year in 2010.

Disclaimer: I honestly have no idea how this happened; but, after reading Bug’s blog I now know some kind sole ponied up some coin for it (and for charity). Dan Wallace sent the Atlas team the link to Tom the Dancing Bug’s latest web-comic on Salon this morning and I was thrilled. The Force truly is with this book.

Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Abyss by Troy Denning is now on sale. Abyss is the third book in the series that finds Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker exiled from the Jedi order he rebuilt. Luke and his son, Ben, are following a trail of clues across the galaxy in a quest to find the reasons behind Jacen Solo’s dark downfall and to gain redemption for the Jedi order.

Series authors Aaron Allston, Christie Golden, and Troy Denning sat down with Suvudu at the San Diego Comic Con to discuss the fate of the Jedi now and tease us about what pitfalls might await them in the future.

Sometimes I’ll stumble across something that I know immediately I have to share with everyone on Suvudu. Gentlemen Broncos, the new movie from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, is one of those somethings.

Our friends at Lucasfilm and Hasbro have put together The Empire Muggs Back, a fun charity auction to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Hasbro donated blank Mighty Muggs figures and the folks at Lucasfilm reached out to artists, designers, and celebrities to break out their pens, paint brushes, markers, and glue guns to turn the blank Muggs into one of a kind works of art.

GeorgeATAT_bg.jpg

theempiremuggsback_sm.jpg

The Empire Muggs Back creations were on display in the Star Wars pavilion at San Diego Comic Con and I was able to take an even closer look at them when I visited the Lucasfilm offices a week later. Unfortunately, I seemed to have just missed Darth Flannel himself, as George Lucas came by to check them out shortly thereafter! D’oh!

You can see all the Muggs that are up for auction by clicking this link. Muggs from Star Wars artists such as Christopher Trevas, Matt Busch, Chris Reiff, and Katie Cook are available along with Muggs from the crew of Robot Chicken, celebrities such as Jane Wiedlin, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars director Dave Filoni. I know I have my eyes on a number of them, and have even made a bid or two, but I’m not telling which ones! Auction closes tomorrow, August 14, so check it out now!

May the Force be with you.
