The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo — from the makers of New York Comic Con — is launching April 16-18, 2010 in downtown Chicago, and C2E2 will be giving fans more than free swag. Oh? Yup, C2E2 is giving attendees the gift of knowledge. See, C2E2 is working with the the Institute for Comics Studies to launch the Comics Studies Conference. An academic program held in conjunction with C2E2, it’ll focus on scholarly presentations, book talks, slide talks, roundtables, professional-focus panels, workshops and other panels centered on sequential art and comics in any form (graphic novels, comic strips, comic books, manga, web comics, etc.), comics-centric works, or adaptations of comics materials, genres, or figures into other media.

If you’re an educator, librarian, or professional, you can apply to present in the Events section of C2E2.com until December 1. Proposals that concern comics produced in or otherwise connected to Chicago, and proposals by Chicago-area faculty, scholars, and comics professionals are especially encouraged.

Japanese actor Eiji Okuda and director Sion Sono will be making an appearance at Kinokuniya Bookstore (1073 Avenue of the Americas) on July 3 at 4:30 PM. Both Okuda and Sono will be in NYC as guests of the New York Asian Film Festival, and they’ll be at Kinokuniya to speak about their careers and their work together on their newest film, BE SURE TO SHARE, which will receive its World Premiere on Sunday, July 5 at 8:15 PM at Japan Society. The film is being co-presented as part of Japan’s Society’s JAPAN CUTS Festival of New Japanese Film.

I know I keep touting the experience of attending a Comic Con.

I can’t help it, because there are so many wonderful facets to these events that I feel they should be covered.

Meeting the creators of certain projects and learning what is going to be released from Hollywood next year is always fun, but Comic Cons can actually be a great place to learn facets of how the book / movie / comic book industries work. When it became obvious that people were looking for guidance in the book industry, publishers, editors and writers learned rather quickly that Comic Cons made a good place to go out and help people while also promoting what they were working on.

At the 2009 NY Comic Con, there were many such panels.

Here is one of them, on video: Writers on Writing!

This panel was moderated by Del Rey Books editor in chief Betsy Mitchell. It had nearly every aspect of writing represented—from novels to short stories to scripts to comic books to etc.—and each panelist speaks to what it means to being a professional writer. Some of the elements may surprise you. The breadth of knowledge gathered together on this panel, some of the writers New York Times bestselling authors, can be extremely helpful. They all discuss what it means to be a professional writer, how to hone prose, and how to develop characters within an interesting story, among many other things!

This is great for people who have aspirations to become a professional writer!
