Chris Evans, editor of military history and author of A Darkness Forged in Fire and The Light of Burning Shadows, can be found discussing any number of odd and fun topics at his blog.

Neil Gaiman is a rock star.

No. Really. He is. And deservedly so.

As I helped Terry Brooks wrap up an autographing session at the San Diego Comic Con that took two hours instead of the alotted one, Neil strolled in through the back entrance of the Autographing Hall surrounded by an entourage of movie studio publicsts, drivers, bouncers and handlers. It was an impressive sight for one of the most gracious, smart and humble authors I know.

I wonder what he thinks about it sometimes.

He strolled up to the table where five or six chairs were set up. On the other side of the table a long, snaking line of his adoring fans waited to meet him and have stuff signed. The people in line had been waiting patiently for more than an hour; they were the lucky winners of a lottery held earlier in the day that I, sadly, was not a winner in.

Thousands of people, like me, had their day crushed just after breakfast.

Neil, Henry Selick (director), Teri Hatcher (voice lending actress) and several others quickly joined the master writer in support of the BluRay release of the movie Coraline, my favorite animated movie this year thus far. Flashes from cameras erupted from the fans when the cast sat down and they were soon signing press packets featuring the DVD. Neil also signed other items, curious about where people lived, what they enjoyed most about Comic Con and any other bevy of questions to make the fans feel comfortable in his presence.

After all, he is bigger than Elvis.

Or hadn’t you heard?

I wish I could have gotten my Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader? comic book set signed by Neil. I am green as the Hulk with envy for those people who were in line!

I guess it will have to wait for another time!

Let the rock star tour again!

icon-comiccon.jpgAuthor Jacqueline Carey came to my home office yesterday to sign hundreds of copies of her new books, Naamah’s Kiss and Santa Olivia, to be sent to people all over the world.

It was the sixth or seventh time we’ve conducted an online signing together.

What is an online signing, you ask?

It’s simple. For the author it is like any number of drop-by bookstore signings they may do while on tour.

For fans, however, it is an opportunity they wouldn’t otherwise have.

I began The Signed Page almost ten years ago to bridge a gap that exists between the touring author and the fan who is unable to attend a bookstore event. In my youth I was that fan. I grew up near the base of Mt. St. Helens, far from any city an author might tour through and getting a signed book from a favorite writer was like pulling teeth. When I could get a signed copy it left my wallet coughing moths.

Once I moved to Seattle and was knee-deep in writers, I saw an opportunity for fans all over the world who had been like me. I devoted The Signed Page to bringing signed and personalized books to those fans who are unable to meet with their favorite touring writers. An author can only visit so many cities per book release, leaving many fans worldwide unable to attain a reasonably-priced signed or personalized copy of their favorite author’s new book for their collection.

I can’t count the thousands of books I have shipped all over the world—purchased at cover price.

And in the almost ten years I’ve been doing this, I’ve never really showed the steps I go through for the writers who sign books for their fans. So I photo documented the process with Jacqueline Carey and her newest books!

Packing 500+ lbs. of books up three flights of stairs is fun!

Continue on to see another 15 pictures with captions of the steps I go through getting signed books to those who love them!

weta-signed.jpgThe people at Weta are geniuses.

What is Weta?

Quite simply, Weta has become synonymous with science fiction and fantasy greatness. It has two branches: Weta Workshop is a five time Oscar winning conceptual design and physical manufacturing facility servicing the world’s entertainment and creative industries. Weta Digital is a world leading visual effects company based in Wellington, New Zealand.

So what has Weta worked on?

Little movies like:

  • The Fellowship of the Ring and sequels
  • King Kong remake
  • The Lovely Bones (directed by Peter Jackson)
  • Avatar (directed by James Cameron)
  • The Adventures of Tin Tin (directed by Steve Spielberg)
  • The Hobbit (directed by Guillermo del Toro)

The last four of those movies are forthcoming and will be box office smashes! And when Comic Con 2009 launches in San Diego next month, Weta will be there to talk about those movies and to highlight much of the work that goes into producing such high quality character and set designs as well as digital effects.

Here are some of the things they are doing:

First, Weta Workshop is selling (5) copies of The Art of The Fellowship of The Ring and The Art of The Two Towers signed by Richard Taylor, John Howe, Alan Lee, Gino Acevedo and Daniel Falconer. These are extremely rare. First come, first served, as they say. Visit Booth #2615 for more information!

Second, Weta Workshop will be featuring at their booth (#2615) a forthcoming line of bronze Lord of the Rings sculptures based on the artwork of the talented John Howe. These are being overseen by John Howe in New Zealand as he helps the art production team begin to bring the initial designs on The Hobbit to life. Weta will be featuring the first two sculptures—both of which are yet unknown. I love bronze sculpture work, so I am very curious about what Weta and John Howe are putting together! Third, Suvudu will be video interviewing Tim Launder (General Manager for Weta Ltd.) and/or Greg Broadmore (Concept Designer at Weta) at Comic Con! Got a question you’d like asked? Post it in the comments below!
