The Winds of Dune has been published in fine bookstores everywhere and authors Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have begun their east coast tour! They rarely make their way eastward but have embarked on a tour from New York to Connecticut to Pennsylvania to Maryland to Ohio—and even to Canada!

To celebrate this, Tor Books has offered signed copies of The Winds of Dune as well as cool swagbags in a series of contests across the internet(s)!

The distinguished science fiction and fantasy blogs taking part are:

Want a copy of The Winds of Dune signed by both Brian and Kevin? Want a cool Dune slingsack? Enter those contests!

If you have the chance, definitely visit the authors on tour. It is always interesting and entertaining listening to Brian talk about the late and great Frank Herbert. For those tour dates, click onward, my friend!

Almost two months ago, Suvudu updated its Free Library with Magic Kingdom For Sale–Sold! by Terry Brooks.

Ever since that time the book has been #1 on Amazon’s Terry Brooks rankings, with the second book, The Black Unicorn, suddenly fluctuating between #2-4. That means a lot of people are reading the first Landover novel and picking up The Black Unicorn!

On Monday I will be updating the Free Library with three new titles, one of which is easily one of my favorite novels. Until then, download Magic Kingdom For Sale–Sold! over the weekend—or whenever!—as a FREE eBook and try it out.

At the end of August, Terry will be doing a short tour for A Princess of Landover, Book Six in the Landover series. I will be posting that tour soon. In the meantime, get acquainted with Landover.

Because one of the books I will be posting for FREE on Monday is also one of Terry’s favorites.

Know the writer before you know the critic!

icon-comiccon.jpgAuthor Jacqueline Carey came to my home office yesterday to sign hundreds of copies of her new books, Naamah’s Kiss and Santa Olivia, to be sent to people all over the world.

It was the sixth or seventh time we’ve conducted an online signing together.

What is an online signing, you ask?

It’s simple. For the author it is like any number of drop-by bookstore signings they may do while on tour.

For fans, however, it is an opportunity they wouldn’t otherwise have.

I began The Signed Page almost ten years ago to bridge a gap that exists between the touring author and the fan who is unable to attend a bookstore event. In my youth I was that fan. I grew up near the base of Mt. St. Helens, far from any city an author might tour through and getting a signed book from a favorite writer was like pulling teeth. When I could get a signed copy it left my wallet coughing moths.

Once I moved to Seattle and was knee-deep in writers, I saw an opportunity for fans all over the world who had been like me. I devoted The Signed Page to bringing signed and personalized books to those fans who are unable to meet with their favorite touring writers. An author can only visit so many cities per book release, leaving many fans worldwide unable to attain a reasonably-priced signed or personalized copy of their favorite author’s new book for their collection.

I can’t count the thousands of books I have shipped all over the world—purchased at cover price.

And in the almost ten years I’ve been doing this, I’ve never really showed the steps I go through for the writers who sign books for their fans. So I photo documented the process with Jacqueline Carey and her newest books!

Packing 500+ lbs. of books up three flights of stairs is fun!

All too often tour information comes all too late.

Author Aaron Allston will set off on a 7 city book tour supporting the release of Outcast, Book One in the Fate of the Jedi series from Lucas and Del Rey Books. As you can see below, the tour begins Tuesday, March 24th! So if you have a chance run out to meet Aaron and discover in person the next great chapter in the Star Wars universe!

From the Random House website:

After a violent civil war and the devastation wrought by the now-fallen Darth Caedus, the Galactic Alliance is in crisis-and in need. From all corners, politicians, power brokers, and military leaders converge on Coruscant for a crucial summit to restore order, negotiate differences, and determine the future of their unified worlds. But even more critical, and far more uncertain, is the future of the Jedi.

In a shocking move, Chief of State Natasi Daala orders the arrest of Luke Skywalker for failing to prevent Jacen Solo’s turn to the dark side and his subsequent reign of terror as a Sith Lord. But it’s only the first blow in an anti-Jedi backlash fueled by a hostile government and suspicious public. When Jedi Knight Valin Horn, scion of a politically influential family, suffers a mysterious psychotic break and becomes a dangerous fugitive, the Jedi become the target of a media-driven witch hunt. Facing conviction on the damning charges, Luke must strike a bargain with the calculating Daala: his freedom in exchange for his exile from Coruscant and from the Jedi Order.

Though forbidden to intervene in Jedi affairs, Luke is determined to keep history from being repeated. With his son, Ben, at his side, Luke sets out to unravel the shocking truth behind Jacen Solo’s corruption and downfall. But the secrets he uncovers among the enigmatic Force mystics of the distant world Dorin may bring his quest-and life as he knows it-to a sudden end. And all the while, another Jedi Knight, consumed by the same madness as Valin Horn, is headed for Coruscant on a fearsome mission that could doom the Jedi Order … and devastate the entire galaxy.

Outcast hits stores on March 24! And may the Force be with you!

Bringing you a feel good moment. And the reason why authors make a difference!

Terry Brooks held his first event for the release of The Gypsy Morph last night. It was a great event where he read an excerpt from the Landover novel to be released in 2009, answered several questions (I’ll post video of that Q&A soon), and he signed hundreds and hundreds of books for his fans.

Halfway through the signing event, a mother with three young children brought her copy of The Gypsy Morph to Terry to be signed. At that exact moment, her cell phone rang; it was her husband calling, a soldier stationed in the Middle East and a huge Terry Brooks fan. The book to be signed was for him and would soon be mailed to the Middle East.

Terry stood up from his chair and asked for the phone.

The Gypsy Morph, Book Three in the Genesis of Shannara series, has now been released. It wraps up the story arc begun in Armageddon’s Children and The Elves of Cintra, where a ragged band of Seattle children, two Knights of the Word, and a few others fight to survive in a world devastated and destroyed by evil—and on the brink of apocalypse!

To help promote The Gypsy Morph and give fans a little insight into his world, Terry has put together a podcast. Use the player above to listen to Terry’s thoughts on the new book, why he tours, why fantasy is relevant and what his future plans are.

Terry is also doing a lengthy tour beginning today! Visit the Events page of his official website to see if he is coming to a bookstore near you!

More on Terry Brooks to be posted here in the coming days so stay tuned!
