novik-dragonbook.jpgAnthologies abound!

There are several great ones coming out in the coming months. The first is The Dragon Book, edited by Jack Dann and Gardner Dozois. It was released on November 3rd and features short stories from some of the very best writers in the business.

One of them is Naomi Novik, author of the recently published In His Majesty’s Service omnibus containing her first three Temeraire novels!

First, here is The Dragon Book summary:

Never before published stories by New York Times bestselling authors Jonathan Stroud, Gregory Maguire, Garth Nix, Diana Gabaldon, and others.

Whether portrayed as fire-breathing reptilian beasts at war with humanity or as noble creatures capable of speech and mystically bonded to the warriors who ride them, dragons have been found in nearly every culture’s mythology. In modern times, they can be found far from their medieval settings in locales as mundane as suburbia or as barren as post-apocalyptic landscapes-and in The Dragon Book, today’s greatest fantasists reignite the fire with legendary tales that will consume readers’ imaginations.

With original stories by New York Times bestselling authors Jonathan Stroud, Gregory Maguire, Garth Nix, Diana Gabaldon, Tamora Pierce, Harry Turtledove, Sean Williams, and Tad Williams as well as tales by Naomi Novik, Peter Beagle, Jane Yolen, Adam Stemple, Cecelia Holland, Kage Baker, Samuel Sykes, Diana Wynne Jones, Mary Rosenblum, Tanith Lee, Andy Duncan, and Bruce Coville.

Second, as a treat to her fans, here is author Naomi Novik reading the first quarter of her anthology submission, the short story titled Vici.

To find out what happens with the first taming of a great dragon in the West, you will have to read The Dragon Book!

Along with the other great short stories in the anthology!

Enjoy!

poster-newmoon.jpgRarely does Orpah have a person on her show who rivals her in sheer popularity.

It happened yesterday, I think.

Stephenie Meyer, author of the mega-successful Twilight saga, spent time with the long-time daytime diva, in her only interview for the New Moon movie release. In the interview she talks about how the idea for Twilight started, how she got published, an alternate ending to New Moon that will never be seen, and many other interesting tidbits from behind the scenes.

I have been lucky enough to have lunch with Stephenie and she is the sweetest, nicest person you can ever meet. Success couldn’t have happened to a nicer or more deserving person.

Below are two YouTube clips of her Oprah appearance on November 13, 2009, followed by two links to more backstage clips:

Yesterday I posted that Stephen King would be returning to the Dark Tower, writing a novel or a collection of interwoven short stories that take place between the events of Wizard & Glass and Wolves of the Calla.

This is big news. Dark Tower fans are a cult I am proudly a part of.

It was announced on his website that the tentative title for the book will be:

The Wind Through the Keyhole

I love it!

It will be at least 8 months before Sai King can begin writing the new book. Which begs the question: What is he working on right now? A screenplay for the zombie story Cell but what else? Wish it was the The Talisman / Black House sequel…

Here is a video of Stephen King from last night’s book signing for his new book, Under the Dome. He is absolutely hilarious in it:

Enjoy!

Not much to say about this, other than it remains one of our favorite viral videos of the year. Nintendo fans everywhere will dig this spot-on reinvention of “Inglourious Basterds” taken into Mario World. Don’t expect this to be coming to the Wii anytime soon. But that doesn’t stop us from dreaming.

R.A. Salvatore is doing some great work this week promoting his new book, The Ghost King!

First, every day this week various blogs around the internet(s) will be featuring questions given to Salvatore and his resulting answers. No question will be asked twice. The schedule for the posted Q&As is below:

Be sure to check out those websites each day this week. And definitely be here for the Suvudu Chat with R.A. Salvatore on Friday!

He also visited the University Bookstore in Seattle, WA last week while on tour supporting his new book, The Ghost King. I took the time to video tape his presentation and the following Q&A with his fans!

I have broken up the 45 minutes worth of video into six parts for viewing ease:

Continue on to listen to the infamous Wubba Wubba story! Hope you enjoy!

The following two videos deal with the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing. It’s a prestigious award that honors the body of work created over a lifetime. This year, the decision was unanimous: Frank Jacobs, the poet laureate of and long-time writer for MAD magazine, and John Broome, a man whose work in comics during the silver age left an indelible fingerprint on many familiar characters, won the honor.

Curious about the Bill Finger Awards? Here’s a quick definition about them from Comic-Con’s official site:

The Bill Finger Award honors the memory of William Finger (1914-1974), who was the first and, some say, most important writer of Batman. Many have called him the “unsung hero” of the character and have hailed his work not only on that iconic figure but on dozens of others, primarily for DC Comics.

What it doesn’t say is this (Kyle’s addition): after creating Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Two-Face, the Bat Cave, the Batmobile, the Batplane, and the Batsignal, named Batman’s hometown Gotham City, and having an involved say in how Batman was shaped, Bill Finger was essentially screwed out of the credits for Batman. For years, his contributions went unrecognized. So, the purpose of the Bill Finger Awards is to recognize great comics writing, attempting to ensure that past writers get their due.

Murphy Anderson Accepts the Award for the Late John Broome

John Broome helped make comics what they are today. At the very least, he helped to forge the stories of many characters we know today. His resume included work on The Flash, Green Lantern, and “The Justice Society of America” to name just a few.

Cover to A Princess of LandoverTerry Brooks went to the San Diego Comic Con to speak on a panel about his forthcoming book A Princess of Landover and hold an autograph session for his numerous fans.

I wasn’t going to let him get away with such an easy time of it!

Terry joined me for an interview early Friday morning at the convention center to talk about the sixth installment in the Landover series, how his convention was going, what he has planned for the next two years of writing, and a hint or two about Book #4 in the Genesis of Shannara series.

Here is that interview.

Disregard the bald man on the right. He doesn’t know what he is talking about!

A Princess of Landoer will be published on August 18th, along with two Landover omnibuses and the newly revised The World of Shannara guide.

I cannot believe it has been a year.

I guess it is true, the old adage: Time flies when having fun!

It has been an interesting year, one filled with magic, wonder and learning. Suvudu launched right before the 2008 San Diego Comic Con on July 18, 2008 and covered that convention with a few hearty souls who fought through the masses of fellow geeks and nerds to bring great video content of the event to the internet(s). We had hopes but we really didn’t know what to expect with the website. Like any newborn, it could grow in many different ways, shapes and spurts. We were confident, however, that we had something to offer connoisseurs of fantasy and science fiction in books, movies and comic books—and we weren’t wrong.

Thankfully, Suvudu was well received and then took off into the stratosphere.

Looking back, Suvudu has grown considerably. I contributed the initial launching post HERE, and since then we’ve had numerous editors, publicists and writers blog about an array of topics.

Like Ali Kokmen, Del Rey employee and Manga Expert!

Oh. Wait. We’ve done far more than standing Against the Darkness!

Continue on to read a year in mini-review as well as what we have planned for the future!

Okay, so technically this is part of the Eisner Awards, but I love the category so much that I wanted to break it out and feature it on its own. The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailing Award highlights a handful of stores each year that exemplify the best in comics retailing. Everything from customer service to store design, community involvement to the sorting and displaying of the stock are taken in to consideration. And the nominations are open to everyone, so stores, pros, and customers can all get in the act and nominate a shop.

That’s when the weeding process takes place. Judges (not me, thank goodness) consider each store and narrow the list down what we have now. It’s as diverse as a good New Editions wall and a lot of fun to go through. But the real fun comes from touring some of these stores via their submission videos* (we’ll look at those after the jump).

So, this year the nominees for the 2009 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailing Award are:

Acme Comics, Greensboro, NC;
Big B Comics, Ontario, Canada;
Comic Book Ink, Tacoma, WA;
Comic Oasis, Las Vegas, NV;
Comics & Vegetables, Tel Aviv, Israel;
Comicopia, Boston, MA;
Cosmic Monkey Comics, Portland, OR;
Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy, Austin, TX;
Drawn To Comics, Glendale, AZ;
Happy Harbor Comics, Edmonton, AB, Canada;
Krypton Comics, Omaha, NE;
Legends Comics, Victoria, BC Canada;
OK Comics, Leeds England;
Phantom of the Attic, Pittsburgh, PA;
Tate’s Comics, Fort Lauderdale, FL;
The Comic Vault, Chicago, IL;
Up, Up & Away, Cincinnati, OH.

Congratulations to the nominees! Now, let’s take a video tour of a few of these shops…

resnick-purifying.jpgOn Monday, June 29th, author Jacqueline Carey came to Seattle on tour in support of her new books, Naamah’s Kiss and Santa Olivia.

As usual, she stopped by The Signed Page to sign copies for her fans all over the world. You can read about that online signing HERE.

But after that signing, she had her normal event at the University Bookstore where she met with her adoring fans to read from her forthcoming 2010 book Naamah’s Curse as well as answer questions and sign books.

Suvudu was there to video it.

Here are five videos taken from the event, Part 2 being the reading from her next book, Naamah’s Curse! Enjoy!

Warren Fahy’s debut novel, FRAGMENT, comes out in mid-June, but you can experience Henders Island now by watching the first of three webisodes based on the book.

How excited are you for THE CITY & THE CITY? Only two more weeks… in the meantime, whet your appetite with this video of China discussing the book.

You have to love some of the little oddities that you find along your surfings on the web. This is one such item and it involves a small project by one of my favorite storytellers as he warmed up for a new project.

This is a Neil Gamain short story brought to life by Gahan Wilson. As Gaiman writes on his blog concerning this very video, this was a writing exercise that he undertook on his way to writing The Graveyard Book. It found it’s way into a story collection of the same name edited by Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly, and now animated by Gahan Wilson.

Hot dog there’ve been some talented hands all over this story!

And as if all of that wasn’t enough, check this out: this little bit of animation comes via The New Yorker (of all places). Just saying that makes me feel all kinds of intellectual and somewhat swarthy. We’re breaking new ground here. Well, actually, maybe they’re doing that over at the New Yorker as well. Regardless, this is a really well-done web video and everyone involved deserves a pat on the back.

The story involves a group of kids who’s get together is crashed by the undead*, who teach them all manner of new and fantastic games. Also, there’s a little jazz involved.
