So, as you may have heard, last week we had Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier in for a live chat. They spoke about writing X-Men: Misfits, about collaborating with each other and with Anzu half-way around the world, about their upcoming projects, and even helped us clean up afterward. Aren’t they great?

Of course, part of the fun of doing these chats is allowing you to grab it and run with it on your own site. Go ahead! All you need to do is download the embed code

Don’t want to download it? Well, that’s cool. Just select all the code in the box below and copy-paste it into your site.

So what else did we cover? Dave and Raina gave us some examples of who inspired various characters…

Tomorrow is the NYC Japan Fair! Come by and say hi to Del Rey Manga and the New York Anime Festival!

NYC’s first Japanese Street Fair runs from 11 AM to 6 PM on Sunday, August 23 from 43rd to 44th Street on Madison Avenue and includes over 40 booths featuring traditional Japanese foods including miso-marinaded beef, roasted mochi, and okonomiyaki, as well as companies including Marukome, Hisamitsu America Inc., Ajinomoto, Otafuku Foods, and Kikkoman.

We have a booth (where 44th meets Madison), and we’ll be giving out NYAF posters, chopsticks, and all kinds of swag throughout the day, but that’s not all. Raina Telgemeier and David Roman - authors of Del Rey Manga’s X-Men: Misfits - will be stopping by the booth, hanging out and signing books from 1-3 PM, and anyone who visits the booth all day long will be entered to win a Del Rey Manga Instant Library - that’s 50 free books from Del Rey Manga! Yes, 50 free volumes of manga!

For more details on the NYC Japan Fair, follow it on Twitter (@NYCJapanFair) and read its blog (http://nycjapanfair.blogspot.com/). For up-to-the-minute reports from the NYC Japan Fair, follow NYAF on Twitter (@NY_Anime_Fest).

We’re bringing the husband-and-wife creative team behind Del Rey’s forthcoming X-Men: Misfits in for a live chat with us and with you. The chat is slated for Monday, August 24th, at 2pm.

Have you entered that into your smart phone’s calendar yet? If not, or if email is more your style, why don’t you use the widget below to sign up for a reminder? And don’t worry, we’re not keeping your addresses with this thing, it’s a one-time reminder.

Of course, if you can’t attend the live event, but still want to ask a question, you can send them along to the team at Del Rey Manga by clicking this link: Del Rey Manga @ RandomHouse.com.

And if you’d like to know a little more about Dave and Raina, you can read about them here.

Dave Roman

DaveRoman.pngDave is a co-collaborator, along with his wife Raina Telgemeier, on X-Men: Misfits, a new graphic novel series for Del Rey. Dave’s day job finds him working as an associate editor over at Nickelodeon Magazine. He is also a Harvey Award nominee, and an Ignatz and Web Cartoonists’ Choice award winner.

Wanna know more about Dave, his art, stories, and otherwise? Of course you do (that’s why you’re signing up for a chat reminder, yes?), so while you’re waiting for the live chat, why don’t you hop on over to his website: it’s yaytime!

Raina Telgemeier

RainaTelemeier.pngRaina Telgemeier is a the co-collaborator, along with her husband Dave Roman, on X-Men: Misfits, a new graphic novel series for Del Rey. She’s also a writer and artist in her own right. Her work is frequently recognized as tops in it’s field. If you don’t believe us, just check out her awards rap sheet: Raina has been nominated for numerous awards, including the Eisner, Ignatz, Cybil, and Web Cartoonists’ Choice awards. To see her illustrations and learn other cool facts about Raina (except how she ended up with one of the coolest names in comics), check out her website: GoRaina.com!

Now, as you can tell by the short bios I have provided here, these two aren’t just collaborators, they’re married. And, according to our own inside sources, they have a reputation for being one of the cutest couples working in the industry. Why? Well, there’s no scientific evidence to prove this, but it might have something to do with the innovated way in which Dave asked Raina to marry him.

Want to know how he did it? He crafted a sneaky comic and asked Raina to illustrate it, and contained in that comic was his proposal. Sounds cool, eh? What’s cooler is that you can check out the comic, complete with a change in perspective (as it shifts from Dave’s art to Raina’s after the proposal) by clicking here: “How We Got Engaged!”

Okay, so to recap:

  • What: Author Chat: X-Men: Misfits authors, Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier
  • When: Monday, August 24
  • Where: Suvudu.com
  • Why: Because Dave and Raina are awesome. Why else?
  • Can’t Attend? Send your questions to Del Rey Manga @ Random House

We’ll see you in the chat!

What are you doing Sunday, August 23? Haven’t thought that far ahead? Take my advice and go to NYC’s first Japanese Street Fair! The “NYC Japan Fair” runs from 11 AM to 6 PM on Sunday, August 23 from 43rd to 44th Street on Madison Avenue and includes over 40 booths featuring traditional Japanese foods including miso-marinaded beef, roasted mochi, and okonomiyaki, as well as companies including Marukome, Hisamitsu America Inc., Ajinomoto, Otafuku Foods, and Kikkoman.

And Del Rey Manga and the New York Anime Festival will be there, too!

We have a booth (where 44th meets Madison), and we’ll be giving out NYAF posters, chopsticks, and all kinds of swag throughout the day, but that’s not all. We’ve got two very special surprises of the Del Rey Manga flavor. (Actually, they’re not really surprises as I’m revealing them right now.)

First up, Raina Telgemeier and David Roman - authors of Del Rey Manga’s X-Men: Misfits - will be stopping by the booth, hanging out and signing books from 1-3 PM. If you’re unfamiliar with X-Men: Misfits, it’s a shoujo-tastic manga take on the X-Men. Really.

Second, anyone who visits the booth all day long will be entered to win a Del Rey Manga Instant Library - that’s 50 free books from Del Rey Manga! Yes, 50 free volumes of manga!

So, there you go. I just took care of your plans for August 23. Come on down to the NYC Japan Fair to meet Del Rey’s Raina Telgemeier and David Roman, NYAF’s Peter Tatara, and probably a gaggle of NYAF Maids. You’re welcome.

icon-comiccon.jpgThe San Diego Comic Con 2009 is less than a month away!

That’s right, fan boys and girls! The largest extravaganza of pop culture is mere weeks away!

Comic books, comic book artists, comic book writers—all in one place. Novelists, editors, dust jacket artists—all in one place. Graphic artists, sculptors, special FX people—all in one place. Free advanced reader copies, free comic books, free goodie bags—all in one place. People dressed as Wookies, people dressed as Darth Vader, people dressed as Slave Princess Leia—all in one place. Hollywood actors, Hollywood directors, Hollywood trailers and premieres—all in one place. Stan Lee, Jim Lee, Jae Lee—all in one place.

Last year, Stan Lee even bumped into me while gaining his hotel room key.

It’s enough to put a big grin on my face! Once again, Team Suvudu will be bringing coverage of the San Diego Comic Con 2009 to the internet(s), through posting, interviews, pictures and video!

But I have a guilty pleasure in going—the Exclusives galore!

Comic Con. 126,000+ people crammed into a convention center. The San Diego Fire Marshall must sweat every minute of all four days every year. With all of those people in one spot, exhibitors must do what they can to entice the most people to their booths instead of a competitor’s booth. They do this in various ways, but the coolest is the use of Exclusives—rare items either given away or sold at Comic Con or bear the Comic Con logo in some way.

Here is a list of my Top 5 Comic Con 2009 Exclusives!

sdcc-halo.jpg#5. Grifball Spartan
McFarlane Toys has been a leading toy manufacturer for more than a decade now, creating some of the coolest toy figures on the market. One such property that has been given the toy treatment is the Microsoft game Halo, a first-person shooter released in 2001 to much acclaim. With sales comes merchandising and Todd McFarlane has taken advantage of that, producing very cool Halo figures for the franchise.

The Grifball Spartan is a character from a team-oriented game called Grifball that is similar to lacrosse but with hands. The ball is used to score points but the other team tries to prevent its foe from scoring by wielding gravity hammers and/or swords. Since I played Halo quite often when I was in college, this figure appeals to my past and is a pretty cool exclusive at Comic Con this year!

The Grifball Spartan is limited to 6,000 pieces and will sell for $15. This exclusive will be available at the Toys “R” Us Comic Con booth, in limited quantity at the Toys “R” Us Times Square store, and through www.toysrus.com.

silvestri-utopia.jpg

Norman Osborn. The Green Goblin. One of Spider-Man’s greatest foes and a diabolical fiend that rivals the evil of DC Comics’ Lex Luthor.

And Norman be a stormin’ through the Marvel Universe!

Like all great villains, Norman doesn’t see himself as one. He is a benefactor. And after the events of the Civil War that gripped the Marvel Universe, Norman is now in a position of power to shape the course of the United States—and the world. Through machinations of his own making, Norman is now seen as a darling by the media and he uses his new position to form the Dark Avengers to begin destroying the superheroes many people in America have come to fear.

Thus begins Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia #1!

Here is the summary:

The Dark Avengers take on the Uncanny X-Men! Kicking off the 6-part crossover event, rising star Matt Fraction (UNCANNY X-MEN, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN) is joined by X-artist supreme Marc Silvestri (X-MEN: MESSIAH COMPLEX, CIVIL WAR: THE INITIATIVE ONE-SHOT) to bring you a story that shakes the foundations of the Marvel Universe. When mutant riots break out in San Francisco, Norman Osborn declares martial law and sends the Dark Avengers in to quell the riots and take down the X-Men. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Don’t miss the first Avengers/X-Men crossover in over 15 years!

Now, I rarely read comic books anymore. Seen it. Done it. But every once in a while, usually a twice or three times a year, a group of creators come together to tell a story that really peaks my interest.

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia is one such story.

It features my favorite artist, Marc Silvestri, doing what he does best. He will be doing the artwork for the first and sixth issues of the arc. And the story of Norman Osborn as he goes after the X-Men with the Dark Avengers is just too good to pass up.

It is a rare thing that living in Ireland offers a scoop on films, but I have just gotten back from Wolverine, and as a die-hard screaming X-Men fan girl, I have one important thing to say:

Gambit didn’t suck.

Non-spoilery comments on the film behind the cut, but one other thing if you’re like me and don’t read these kinds of blog comment thingies at all (ah yes, I are a professional writer, do not try this at home) until after you’ve seen the movie: stay through the credits.

Here are the other book, DVD and movie releases for the week!

  • Arthas: Rise of the Lich King by Christie Golden

How does a comic book artist come up with a fresh take on an iconic character?

Take, for example, Nightcrawler. He’s been appearing in comics since 1975. The greatest artists in the history of the medium have already taken a crack at him. Is there really a new and interesting way to draw Nightcrawler?

Well, an awesome site called The Nightcrawler Sketchbooks has over 200 answers to that question. Diana Nock—who has proven herself Nightcrawler’s #1 fangirl—has collected over 200 sketches of Nightcrawler, from artists ranging from Bill Willingham to Craig Thompson. Here’s a gorgeous sketch by Ted Naifeh:
